Loving this book!

I am loving this book--so I bought HG Wells Short History of the World, too.
The Outline is outstanding, I've read lots of history books--including Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything (an all-time favorite that I frequently give as a gift), but explanations in The Outline are often simpler and clearer than many others. At 1,000 pages you'd think there'd be a mass of extraneous details but the book covers so much ground that it never gets bogged down. If you need more, HG Wells also wrote companion books that delve deeper into related scientific areas.

This is one of the books that every educated person should read. This kind of knowledge is not available normally via the traditional media. To watch television for more than an hour a day (except for special sports events) seems to me to be self-abuse. Don't abuse ourself wtih useless information. Partake of the wine of sweet knowledge. Quirky entertainment in the form of a history

Iread this book about 50 years ago and enjoyed it immensely so decided to re-read the Kindle version. Because it's an outline, it doesn't belabor anything - Wells pretty much keeps thing moving. And the thing that I found entertaining is that Wells often editorializes. For example, talking about the foul odours eminating from early cave mens abodes (from such things as rotten meat) he compares it to the odours from some continental hotels. There are several things I DON'T like about this Kindle edition. It's full of typographical errors and there are literally hundreds of inappropriately placed commas throughout, making it often difficult to follow Well's very long sentences. I also deplore the fact that none of the scores of illustrations are included. To make matters worse, there are the titles of all of these so you know damned well what you're missing. But then, for 80 cents I suppose one shouldn't complain........It's still a good read.

About the Author
Burton J. Bogitsh received his undergraduate education in biology at New York University (University Heights) and his graduate education at Baylor University (M.A.) and the University of Virginia (Ph.D.). He is currently Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt University. He has authored more than 100 publications in the area of parasitology and has co-authored a textbook in General Zoology. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Morphology, co-editor of Volume 2 of the Microscopical Anatomy of Invertebrates, and has contributed many chapters to numerous edited volumes on parasitology. His research interests are in the ultrastructural localization of enzymes in helminths with a primary focus on the digestive tracts of trematodes.

Dr. Carter received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in biology at Loma Linda University and his Ph.D. degree at the University of California at Los Angeles. He is currently a Professor Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt University. He has authored more than 70 publications with a primary focus on the biochemistry and immunology of parasites. You Get What You Pay For (And not much else)

Like most general internists in America, I do not have much contact with parasitology. I bought the book to learn more about the topic and it fulfilled the expectation. It's a laundry list of organisms that have both a lot in common and their own idiosyncrasies. None of it is memorable and all of it can be obtained from reading any Internal Medicine textbook.

Parasitology as a whole is lightly touched on in MLT (associate level) and MT/MLS (Bachelors level) courses and certifications. This is a must read for anyone who works in a micro lab.

Clear and concise book with detailed monochrome diagrams and figures.

This is a fantastic book. It's not too dense and is actually quite readable. Each parasite has a complete summary including background, life cycle, clinical manifestations, detection methods, epidemiology, immunology and more. Similar to what other reviewers have said, most of the figures are colorless diagrams, but they are well-drawn and easy to follow. If self-studying, it would be best to pair with an atlas.

Highly recommended for anyone wishing to delve into the interesting realm of parasitology.

Nick Macari's The Working Writer's Guide to Comics and Graphic Novels is hands down the BEST book out on the craft of writing for comics and related sequential media. Sure there are other books by people with more recognizable names, but where their books live in concepts and theory, but in The Working Writer's Guide Nick puts his money where his mouth is and gets down to brass tacks about putting these concepts into ACTION. Few, if any of those other books give you how many words you should put in a panel to display how many is too many. Few of them show you a template for organizing your scripts. Those other may be good reads, but TWWG is an invaluable resource when it comes to the challenge of writing comic script that reads well and isn't cluttered. This book hasn't left my desk since it arrived and I refer to it whenever I am writing. The Working Writer's Guide is a golden resource for anyone interested in the business of comic books storytelling.

I have read pretty much every books about comic book writing from Eisner to Mc Cloud and Bendis and they
're all good but The Working Writer's Guide will take you to the next level. It explains writing comics in specific ways that everyone can use. I love this book. It should be part of your writing bibles collection, right on your desk.
