About the Author

J. M. Hughes is an embedded systems engineer with over 30 years of experience in electronics, embedded systems and software, aerospace systems, and scientific applications programming. He was responsible for the surface imaging software on the Phoenix Mars Lander and was part of the team that developed a novel synthetic heterodyne laser interferometer for calibrating the position control of the mirrors on the James Webb Space Telescope. Over the years he has worked on digital engine control systems for commercial and military aircraft, automated test systems, radio telescope data acquisition, 50+ gigapixel imaging systems, and realtime adaptive optics controls for astronomy. On his own time (when he has any) he likes to do cabinetry and furniture design, build microcontroller-based gadgets for use with greenhouses, bees, and backyard urban chickens, and write books.

Certainly not a complete reference - but still a good Arduino book

I'm a seasoned (not old!) engineer with a few decades of software and electronics experience. I work as a pure software engineer these days, but still enjoy the world of electronic gizmos: Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP8266, and all those wonderful sensors and interfaces! So this review is from that perspective. Here are some random thoughts, in no particular order:

This not a bad book. Rated 4 stars for "I like it". Although at times I admit I had considered returning it. I think the title is a bit misleading - but emphasize "in a Nutshell" and perhaps that justifies it. A better title would be: "A complete reference for the beginner". I have a hard time accepting the "for Technicians, Engineers" part. Perhaps I should simply encourage newbies on this book: don't be intimidated by the title!

The book presents some relatively good ideas of "what's out there"... but sadly does not really go into the specifics that I'd expect a "for engineers" book to have. At times it reads like a detailed catalog. Not necessarily a bad thing, I suppose.

What I was looking for: something all in one place so I don't have to keep scouring the internet for a technical detail. For that, this book is close, but seriously lacking in some places. For instance, I really would have liked to see more on SPI, ICSP, I2C, JTAG, etc. Yes, this is all on the internet. For instance the "AVR910: In-System Programming" pdf from Atmel covers ICSP quite well of course.

There are a LOT of embedded links. We'll see in a few years how cool that might be, but for now - it works well for the most part. Ok, some of the Atmel links take you to the search page at Atmel (perhaps direct links broken already?). It would be interesting to see how the real-world printed book looks with all those links (obviously this is a review for the kindle version). I don't really like the links being a mystery as to exactly where they go, but it makes reading a little less messy with crazy-long URLs.

Overall - the editing is rather good - as expected from a real publisher - although the overall organization leaves a bit to be desired. One of the things I find incredibly annoying for those cheap-o, self-publish books is this poor grammar and spelling, This is obviously not the first technical O'Reilly book! Clearly they know how to use a spell checker! Regarding the organization, for instance: I found the chapter on "Arduino Technical Details" a bit annoying: First all of the board dimensions are listed for all the various flavors (Uno, Pro, Mega, etc.).. and THEN the boards are re-listed with their pinouts. Really? Why not put all the technical details for a specific board together in one continuous section?

At times the depth of technical details is impressively weak. There's one section that I really grimaced: it says "[for]..Arduino boards the reset button must be pressed as soon as the IDE starts to upload the compiled program in order to detect the upload. You may need to do this a few times to get the timing just right." Remember this is a book for engineers! That's it? No mention of the possible use of DTR? If not available, how about instead better instructions:

1) Hold down reset button
2) Select Upload (while still holding reset)
3) When IDE says Uploading, release the reset button

The author acknowledges the disarray at one point on page 156: "This chapter has been a whirlwind tour through multiple topics". imho - those topics could have been organized into something logical. Perhaps the editors rushed the author.

Ok - some of these complaints are petty. Overall the book is not bad, really. :)

I've seen some really bad kindle versions of books. This one does pretty well for the most part. Ok, there are some schematics that are pretty much useless, at least on a kindle. There's no ability to zoom, and the text is so small, only about one pixel high! I really like being able to highlight, and create my own pseudo index. This is more of a compliment to amazon. This one however does a pretty good job overall on the kindle.

For a more complete preview of the book, be sure to check amazon on the web... there's way more for the "look inside" than there is for the download preview.

So overall - ya, I'd say this is a good book. Certainly if you are just starting out, this might be a good choice rather than buying numerous other books that will likely end up repeating information between each of them.

Other books to seriously consider: Exploring Arduino: Tools and Techniques for Engineering Wizardry - that's a really great book and the author has done a good job supplementing the book with free youtube videos. Grade 2-4-- Van Allsburg's latest offering may be seen as preachy or provocative, allegorical or obvious, but like much of his previous work, it is bound to attract attention and stimulate discussion. Written in the form of a ship's log, the book outlines the unusual events that take place aboard the Rita Anne after the discovery of a glowing stone on a mysterious, deserted island. In a few brief entries, Captain Randall Ethan Hope notes his initial pleasure in the cultured and convivial crew, details the finding of the luminous stone, and divulges its terrible transformative effect--his shipmates have been turned into primates. When a sudden storm blows up, the Captain expects the worst. However, the ship survives long enough for the men to be rehabilitated and subsequently rescued. The stone is sent to the bottom of the sea by Captain Hope and all on board swear themselves to secrecy. The dramatic illustrations increase the suspense and surprise inherent in the unlikely adventures described. Visual humor, although used sparingly, also adds to the appeal of the colorful paintings. The two-time Caldecott winner continues the didactic vein of Just a Dream (1990). Captain Hope records the eerie events during a voyage of the Rita Anne. His crew is hard-working and ``accomplished in other ways''--they enjoy reading, music, and storytelling. Even so, after they stop on an island and bring back a mysterious rock with one smooth face that gives off a ``peculiar light,'' the men do nothing but watch it. Mesmerized, they sit transfixed until they are transformed into apes who don't even help when the ship is disabled in a storm. So, fortunately, is the stone, and Hope finds that the men are gradually returned to themselves as he reads to them. The artist's elegantly structured, richly shadowed paintings suggest more enigmatic depth than the story delivers, while the starkly boxed text interrupts the visual flow of each spread. The Wretched Stone is the second book I have read in the Van Allsburg line of books. The glowing stone that fascinated the sailors could have been compared to television "in the old days." Nowadays, it could be compared to smart phones or one of the many other pieces of technology that we have in abundance. That glowing stone could be taking us all over if we aren't careful. A wonderfully well written book that really makes you think. Also, maybe a bit intense for younger children.

Great ammunition against TV!

If you have trouble getting your kids to turn off the tv...here is a wonderful adventure book to show the kids how too much television viewing can turn you into an "ape"! Filled with metaphors for older children (8 and up) to figure out: Could the strange island where they found the wretched stone once have been inhabited with intelligent life? Perhaps all that is left (after pollution, technology) is unedible vegetation, undrinkable water, stinky odors--but the "stone" remains,("rough textured, gray with portion that is flat and smooth as glass,"), sound like a tv? How about the lightning that knocks out the "power" of the stone/tv? And I love the part where..."It seems that those who knew how to READ recovered more quickly."

Another recommended "anti-tv" book for kids: "Fred's TV" by, Clive Dobson.(may be out of print, but can still get in online!)

Philosophy Made Simple

How simple could it be? Well, it isn't particularly, but it is more simple when you have this book. I first read this text as a freshman in junior college in 1972... Ugh. But I've referred to it ever since then, first as an introduction and later a quick resource for contrast and comparison. It was wonderful, and over the years it has been on my reference shelf and lent out to friends, students and my kids again and again. When I recently lost my original copy I was surprised to find that it was still in print, and didn't hesitate to order a replacement. The viewpoints of each of the classic authors represented my not be detailed enough for every inquiry, but this book helps in overcoming the hesitation you may have when you want/need to read the writers for yourself. So, for this reader, as a survey of major philosophical views and concepts, this book is wonderful.

Great Introduction

I took two philosophy courses about 15 years ago when I was doing my undergraduate work. When I became interested in philosophy recently I found Philosophy Made Simple. For a mere ten dollars this book gives one a terrific introduction to philosophy. Don't think just because it has "Made Simple" in the title that it is somehow overly dumbed down for the readers. The book conatains quite a few excerpts from some of the major thinkers in the history of philosophy. This book also gives one an overview of a number of different areas of philosophy which will be great for someone like me, who doesn't even know where to start. You can then easily pull names of philosopers from whatever area you are interested in out of the book and begin reading their individual works as I have. Overall a great read.

Good overview of philosophy, but a little long-winded

I bought this as a sort of "Cliff Notes" for philosophy, since I don't really know much about the subject and wanted to learn more, particularly about contemporary philosophy. While the book is very thorough, it gets a little boring, and I kept wondering when it would discuss the contemporary stuff. Well it turns out that is only covered in the last like 10 pages, unfortunately. I ended up skimming large portions of the book, which is easy to do because critical sections are highlighted in bold. Overall pretty good, but if you're looking for a quick summary of philosophy, this isn't super quick.

Charles Edge has been working with Apple products since he was a child. Professionally, Charles started with the Mac OS and Apple server offerings in1999 after years working with various flavors of Unix. Charles began his consulting career working with Support Technologies and Andersen Consulting. In 2000, he found a new home at 318, a consulting firm in Santa Monica, California which is now the largest Mac consultancy in the country. At 318, Charles leads a team of over 40 engineers and has worked with network architecture, security and storage for various vertical and horizontal markets. Charles has spoken at a variety of conferences including DefCon, BlackHat, LinuxWorld, MacWorld and the WorldWide Developers Conference. Tracing "Usher"

Dennis R. Perry and Carl H. Sederholm attempt to trace the contributions of Edgar Allan Poe to major works of horror and Gothic in America, arguing that Poe is not merely an influence on all American Gothic after him, but that he "is the dominant ghost haunting modern American horror" (18). Perry and Sederholm suggest this by focusing on Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher," and its direct influence on several texts, which include Gilman's "The Yellow Wallpaper," James's The Turn of the Screw, Lovecraft's fiction, Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House, Bloch's Psycho, Levin's Rosemary's Baby, and King's The Shining.
Perry and Sederholm's preface and first chapter explain the purpose of their study and their reasoning behind focusing on Poe's "House of Usher." They claim that Poe studies have largely overlooked Poe's influence on Gothic and horror writers and that because of Poe's varied styles and broad influence on American fiction, "he can easily be marginalized in studies of genres in which he should be acknowledged as a key player" ("Preface" vii). They define Poe's work broadly enough to encompass genres like Gothic and horror, arguing that his work is much more varied than most studies suggest, and they focus on "House of Usher" to narrow the scope of their study, positing that this story is Poe's masterpiece and serves as an appropriate model for studying elements of Gothic and horror.
Poe's Gothic traditions are well noted in the first chapter, as Perry and Sederholm claim that Poe's "House of Usher" is the "culmination of the Gothic literary tradition," noting Ann Radcliffe and Horace Walpole as the forerunners of genre (8). Defining the characteristics of the genre and hinting at how it overlaps with genres like horror or ghost stories gives the book a solid foundation for tracking the tradition, its culmination in Poe, and then Poe's continuous "haunting" influence on the American Gothic.
Though Perry and Sederholm are thorough in examining the "Usher Formula" and the elements that characterize it, the explanation may be difficult to grasp for someone unfamiliar with a wide scope of American literature and the criticism that they refer to (like Freud and Todorov). Nevertheless, this explanation serves as a good context as the following chapters mark the influence of Poe throughout the Gothic and horror traditions in American literature and popular culture. What makes this book interesting and difficult at the same time is the number of goals that Perry and Sederholm set out to accomplish. Primarily, they examine Poe's place in the literary conventions of Gothic and horror and trace the influence of "House of Usher." They also use this conversation to promote an understanding of what makes Poe's "House of Usher" so significant in culture (as they explain its significance in the world of literary criticism). Other goals include accounting "specifically for the overlooked significance of 'The Fall of the House of Usher'" and contributing "to the ongoing recent discussion of the aesthetics and cultural significance of Gothic literature and its branches: terror, horror, romance, and the weird tale" (4, 11). Though all of these goals are accomplished to some degree, the scope of the study seems too broad, even though Perry and Sederholm attempt to narrow it significantly by focusing on American texts and the influence of only one of Poe's tales.

For the money this is a really nice book of Beatles songs. The arrangements are good and accurate. I don't know about whether they are in the 'right key' or not. It is easy enough to transpose for the somewhat experienced player. I use a capo for some of them just to adjust for my vocal range (female-mezzo-soprano). I really like the simple, yet beautiful arrangement for "Rain". The lyrics are a teeny bit off. It is 'when the rain comes' not, 'if the rain comes', etc. This is not for a beginner. There are somewhat difficult bar chords and not all the chords in the arrangements are referenced in the back. Any comprehensive chord book will fix this. Or some figuring out. I have been playing for a year (compulsively) and I have a music background. I wasn't able to use most of the songs in this book when I first got it last year. The biggest beef I have with this book is the size and the fact you need to weight the pages down. But what do you want for the price? I am planning on scanning the pages and enlarging them. I'm now going to look for some others in the series. Keep practicing!

Just brilliant.

This is an affectionate skewering of your favorite literary figures of the last 2,000 years. Quality-of-execution-wise, Mallory Ortberg manages to keep everyone recognizably in character while translating their sentiments and their communication styles into contemporary terms and forms. Concept-wise, well...you obviously jumped right on something called "Texts From Jane Eyre." And it is freaking HILARIOUS.

A couple of these have appeared in her online work, but most were new to me. The few sections that were based on books I hadn't read, I was at least familiar enough with the basic premise/characters that I "got it." Medea, petulant Achilles, Pride & Predjudice, and E.A.Poe are, to my mind, instant short-form comedy classics.

One complaint. No, two complaints. TOO SHORT I NEED MORE, and also omg how did you not do "Vanity Fair"?! COME ON, that one is PERFECT. A sequel is required, with Vanity Fair. Also Ivanhoe.

I'm calling it now: This book is your go-to Christmas or birthday present for anyone bookish. It's the kind of book that I would probably never buy for myself - but I would definitely grab it for a literature-obsessed friend....and I would be delighted if someone got it for me.

The concept is simple - what if your favourite literary characters had cell phones and were able to text each other? What would they say? Would they use emoji? (Answer: YES).

As you can probably tell, this book is chock full of inside jokes. Most of the books that Ortberg turns into text form are classics - you'll see everything from Odysseus to Pride & Prejudice to The Great Gatsby here. But there are also a few newer adult and YA books, like The Hunger Games, where Ortberg has spun into a hilarious story of Peeta and his obsession with baking (note: the illustrations in this book are great and I'm pretty sure that the final version will be much prettier than my ARC!)

Ortberg has clearly read a lot more classics than I have, so there were definitely some "chapters" that I skimmed through simply because I didn't know the book. But for the books, authors and poets that I have read and loved, she pretty much hits the nail on the head and had me rolling on the floor. I definitely snorted out loud a few times, because of COURSE Catherine and Heathcliff would be texting overwhelmingly scary "I love yous" to each other. Of COURSE John Keats would be obsessing over the prettiness of an urn. And of course, Frank Churchill would be texting Emma about how much he doesn't like reserved people.

There are a ton more books that have been "textified" - some of which are REALLY fun (Babysitters Club, anyone?).

The best way to experience Texts From Jane Eyre is to read it a text conversation at a time - it's not one where you'll sit on your couch and read straight through (well, you might. I did!) - instead, it's the kind of book you'll leave on your coffee table and leaf through when you need a quick laugh, and pull out for your other literary-minded friends at a party so that you can giggle out loud together.

Okay I guess

Really deserves 2.5, premise is solid enough, but the comedic style is repetitive. The "joke" is one person, or both, texting is crazy in some manner specific to the book or author. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, a few spot on moments, but the style stretches very thin. I recommend reading it to kill time, but not as a purchase.
