Strictly a bathroom reader

Any fans of stand-up comedy will like the idea of this book, one section for each aspect of comedy. But unfortunately it falls into the same trap most comedy books: It's tries to be funny first and interesting second.

There's little substance, just jokes, and very few times I really laughed. Reading this from front to back is ill-advised, put it next to the can and read a few pages while you're dropping the kids off at the pool.

BTW, there's a book-on-tape out on this book where popular comedians read out chapters of the book in front of audiences. It's also kinda Zzzz....: [...]

I don't do book reviews, I don't do surveys, I'm really lazy. But, for this book? For this book, I will take three minutes to write my first ever book review. It will be short. Ready? This is the funniest book I have ever read in my entire life. Sure, it could just be a crazy coincidence that the humor of the authors is the exact humor I like, but I think that anyone will find this book funny. I read the book over the course of a month so as to savor it, and I read 5 pages a night, and I laughed every single night, and 3/4ths of the nights I laughed till I had tears in my eyes. I'm cynical and not humored easily. But this book is incredibly funny.

Look Elsewhere for Lessons in Thinking Strategically

I will list a series of pros and cons. Ultimately, I do not feel as though I got any value from this purchase; however, that is not to say that the book does not have merit for the right audience. I purchased the book hoping to gain insight on how to think strategically, and I do not feel that I have been improved in this way. This book does offer a whirlwind overview of Game Theory, and is not a bad place to start for the price of a cup of coffee. Also, I am impressed that I actually did read it in just 50 minutes, which shows that the authors and editors put a lot of thought into exactly what needed to be included and what did not in order to meet that 50 minute promise.

PROS:
* The book is easily read in just 50 minutes
* The book contains a list of key facts in Game Theory
* The key facts contained and the format of the book make it a great "Cliff Notes" version of Game Theory

CONS:
* The facts are very blunt and direct, and in a few cases I feel that the authors either mis-understood or mis-communicated the concept they were describing.
* The book does not contain enough practical discussion of application to make it useful in changing the way in which a person thinks.

Chewy Food for Thought

This is an insightful look at a beloved story. As with any kind of an in-depth literary analysis, it's hard to find a definitive response. To some extent, we must always relegate our thoughts to mere speculation. I don't agree (at least at first glance) with all of the conclusions here, but they're all chewy food for thought. I definitely won't be looking at Gatsby in the same way ever again, and I appreciate having had my brain stretched.

Insightfully Challenging the Norm

It has been said that reading F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel The Great Gatsby is a mysterious experience—something like eating a bowl of whipped cream and, once you are done, feeling totally full and satisfied. This may be due several reasons: the characters are simultaneously exaggerated and real; both the story and the situation capture an essentially American experience, one replete with longings, triumphs, and failures; and then there is, of course, the luminosity of Fitzgerald’s prose. For almost thirty years, as a student and professor of American literature, I have sought to unravel the mystery of this book and have resolved to teach it as often as possible until I get my lectures just right. This has yet to happen.
Nevertheless, Neal Abbott’s insightful examination of this most American of texts brings me closer to this gold ring: his perspicacious reading calls into question some of the most established assumptions of the story, about who killed Myrtle Wilson and even who killed Gatsby himself. Also, once he lays out his argument that Gatsby is on a grail quest, it seems so obvious that one wonders why it wasn’t seen before, let alone why it isn’t one of the more popular and established readings of the book.
Again, I have tried for many years to perfect my teaching of The Great Gatsby and, because of Mr. Abbott’s little book, I feel I am much closer to that goal.

Makes a great guy-gift!

I bought this comprehensive and beautifully designed set of 2 books as a Christmas present for my husband who is a structural engineer. He absolutely loves it! The photographs of the different buildings are amazing and all descriptions are written in English, German and French. The books also include architectural drawings. Outstanding!

Philip Jodidio is the 'go-to' guy for architectural monographs and/or a compendium of style/trends in the world of architecture and design. For anyone tied to the field, this is a much needed and warmly welcomed addition to one's library. Unlike many counterparts who choose/selected the expected 'greatest hits' in such an offering, Jodidio surprises his reader answering the all important question, "Tell me something I don't know."

I always am on the outlook for offerings by this author. Truly a welcomed addition to my evolving collection of illustrated resources on a field I not only admire and appreciate, but also is a major element of my professional livelihood.

This arrived today and volume 2 of the set became my all-time fave due to the excellent up-to-the-minute inclusions. they are all here. zaha hadid, tadao ando, etc. nice,glossy finish,tons of modern photos,and the set feels like it was made of concrete, it is so haeavy and chock full of goodness. highly, highly recommend it if you love modern design, tadao ando styled concrete homes with cool art and furniture. buy with no fear.

Ford examines the degree to which these models were followed, either in spirit or in form, and reveals much about both the theories and techniques of modern architecture, including the extent to which the current constructional theories of High Tech and Deconstruction are dependent on the traditional modernist paradigms, as well as the ways in which all of these theories differ from the realities of modern building.

Just like the first one

Like the first volume, excellent book. Be prepared, however, for sentences like this, on page 127: "Perhaps because this methodology required the juxtaposition of opposites seemingly incapable of reconciliation, the irrational combination of radically different techniques, and the simultaneous consideration of multiple variables, it was one at which Aalto excelled". Both books are pretty much like that. It's interesting to read these elaborate sentences, but often they're the umpteenth re-statement of a point. After reading these volumes you'll have an overview of the important buildings and architects of the Twentieth century, complete with detailed drawings describing exactly how they were built, and a sense that architects will always agonize over the deceptions they are forced to perpetuate.

The missing details

I received the books (both the earlier publication and the follow up vol 2) today after a long wait. I must say that I have high expectation of the books and reckon that they could make an important contribution to the study of architecture. In an age where students are learning only from glossy mags and have no idea how buildings are put together and how the tactile quality of construction works, I think it is right that somebody should revisit the art and craft of architecture.
However, I am greatly disappointed with the books. Whilst the text is general reasonable, insightful and critical, the same cannot be said to the drawings. In a nutshell, they are badly drawn and poorly finished. For example, the style of the drawings does not reflect the quality of the material used. And who is going to believe that when materials of different qualities are joined together, there is no tolerance? Fixing methods are not illustrated and I have a suspicion that some of the details are guesswork. This is evident by noting the impossibility of construction sequence based on the drawings. The most unforgivable sin of the drawings is that lines are missing, or are wrongly drawn. Like my teachers used to say to us, students of architecture, the guy who did the drawings simply has no idea of construction and detailing.
As far as trying to teach my students the art and craft of architecture, I will definitely give the books a miss. The books are only useful to show how they should not be done.
