This is THE book.

Try as I might, I cannot understand the negative reviews here. This is THE book on options. McMillan writes clearly and well. There is nothing glib here -- no promises of great wealth, no hype, no pandering to fools. What is here is solid information presented well and thoroughly.
A criticism that came up more than once (copy cat reviews?) is that the book doesn't show practical stuff. What! It provides all the information that any reasonably intelligent person needs to UNDERSTAND exactly what the strategies are and when to apply them. To ask for more is to ask for easy and oversimplified answers that will part you from your money.
The book is thick. True. You don't need all that is in it. True. The book is frightening or dull or not as useful as (gimme a break!) Wade Cook!!!
Hey! It's a text book, not a novel. Wake up! You can use it to find what YOU want to know.
There is more useful information in this book than in any hustler's high-priced and hype-filled seminar. It's all you need and it's currently selling for less $. Don't get scared off by the negative reviews or you'll miss out on the most respected and best of all the many books written on options.
If you're not willing to spend $ and a little effort to learn about options, you're not likely to profit from them. Buy the book. Then, sit down and read in it to find the definitive answers to your option questions. It simply doesn't get any more accurate, any clearer, or any better.
(Oh yes, one or two reviewers suggested that the book is out of date.

The Best Reference Book on Options

I won't say I've read every book on Options out there, but I've looked at a range, from the very complex, full of calculus equations and whatnot, to the very simple, and to my mind, this is the best. First of all, it is very thorough and well organized. It goes step by step through virtually every option strategy, analyzing the various payoffs, follow-up actions if the market goes against you, etc. It is written clearly and concisely, with lots of examples. One reviewer says it's too complicated. If you think this book is too complicated, then you simply should not be trading options. Period. Another critic says there are too many examples. Yes, there are a lot of examples, and if you find you understand the concepts the author describes just fine without the example, then you'll probably just skip them. However, if there is something you don't quite get, the examples are a real help. I think some reviewers were hoping for a book that would tell them how to get rich in a few months trading options. Well, good luck, and let me know when you find it. But for a terrific reference that every serious amateur will go back to time and again, then this book should be the first on your Options bookshelf.

A four-star book but a three-star update.

Several years ago my broker recommended the 4th (2002) edition of this book. I liked it so much that I bought two of McMillan's subsequent publications: McMillan on Options, Second Edition (Wiley Trading) (cited as McMillan, 2004) and Options for Volatile Markets: Managing Volatility and Protecting Against Catastrophic Risk (Bloomberg Financial) (cited as McMillan, 2011). I've learned much from McMillan's books and have given them four-star reviews; however, I am a bit disappointed in the updates to this 5th edition.

Having read the 4th edition and two subsequent publications, I did not find any significantly new material in this 5th edition. About 85% of the book repeats information in the 4th and possibly earlier editions. The new material includes a chapter on mathematical applications (pages 447 - 477) and an expanded discussion of volatility (pages 767 - 947). The mathematical applications give a good overview of an option's theoretical value. If you want to learn how to calculate theoretical values, however, you should also read Options, Futures, and Other Derivatives (4th Edition) (Hull, 2011).

Although new to this book, much of the information on volatility was previously published in McMillan 2004 (pages 241-568) and McMillan 2011 (pages 171 - 204). For example, Figures 41-2 (p 872) and 41-3 (p 878) in this book are identical to Figures 9.1 and 9.9 in McMillan 2011. Also, much of the volatility - related text and several of the tables in this book are similar to those in McMillan 2004 and 2011. While one might criticize McMillan for repackaging the same material in different books, on the positive side: If you buy this book, you do not need to buy the other two.

I am disappointed that this 5th edition still uses hypothetical examples, rather than actual trades. While hypothetical examples are useful in explaining how to construct a position or to illustrate a position's sensitivity to individual variables (i.e., the Greeks: delta, gamma, vega and theta), they often do not give one a practical sense of whether the trade would be profitable or even feasible. Moreover, the hypothetical examples are mathematically rigged to give simple outcomes that do not occur in real trades.

Throughout the book McMillan advises his readers to construct option positions that are insensitive or "delta-neutral" to changes in the price of the underlying stock (e.g. Chapters 6, 11, 12 and 13). In his example of a neutral calendar spread (page 215) he buys 7 April 45 calls and sells 8 July 45 calls. The ratio of calls bought to calls sold was calculated from an unrealistic delta ratio of .7/.8. Actual delta values are expressed to at least four decimal places. A neutral position based on deltas rounded to the nearest tenth would be far from neutral.

Chapter 40 explains how to create a position that is neutral with respect to both gamma and delta and would profit at a specific rate (vega) if implied volatility increases or decreases (pages 835 - 836). Theoretically, such a position would be insensitive to changes in the stock's price but would profit with changes in implied volatility (IV). The example trade sells volatility; i.e. it would profit by $238.00 for every 1% drop in IV. To construct such a position for the hypothetical "XYZ" stock, one must buy 100 April 50 calls, sell 173 April 60 calls and short 1,759 shares of XYZ stock. In my opinion, this is an extremely large position just for the sake of making a profit when implied volatility drops.

I constructed two delta / gamma neutral spreads in a simulated account using the same math and methods that McMillan used in his example. One spread on Apple Computer (AAPL) would profit if implied volatility drops, and another spread on General Electric (GE) would profit if implied volatility rises. Unlike McMillan's example, the only way I could come close to achieving a delta / gamma neutral position was to specify a more modest return from vega e.g. -100.00 < position vega < 100.00. The position vega in McMillan's example is 278.00. Like McMillan's example, these were extraordinarily large positions; so large that the 500,000.00 cash balance in my simulated account did not provide sufficient margin to execute either trade. If anyone wants to see the specifics of these simulated trades, leave a comment or send me an email.

McMillan 2004 (page 505) includes a similar example of a huge position (555 contracts) that is delta/gamma neutral with limited vega risk. Later (page 516) McMillan concedes that this is a "theoretical example", but in this book, McMillan appears to be advising his readers to actually make these large trades. I wonder who he had in mind? Perhaps the London Whale made these types of trades until Jamie Dimon fired him.

The book exaggerates the potential profits and low cost of adding a collar to a long stock position. According to Table 17-3 (page 264), a collar made by the sale of 2 ½ year out-of-the-money (OTM) calls and the purchase of 2 ½ year at-the-money (ATM) puts allows a 30% - 70% profit with a small risk. The text states, "Thus one should consider using 2.5 year LEAPS options when he establishes a collar because the striking price of OTM calls (that are sold) can cover the costs of ATM puts." I checked the price of adding a 2 ½ year collar to NKE, IBM, JPM and AAPL and found that the sale of any OTM call would not cover the cost of an ATM put. To break even, one would have to sell at least two calls for every put purchased. Note that in "Options for Volatile Markets" (McMillan 2011) McMillan recommends a different collar strategy: buy six-month puts and sell one month calls with strike prices approximately 2% OTM (page 149).

I stumbled on a few errors that while insignificant, should not exist after six editions:

* The text states, "Figure 37-8 shows just two cases - implied volatility of 30% and implied volatility of 80%." (page 731) The two curves in Figure 37-8 are both labeled IV = 30%.

* The short "240 January 70 calls" (p 841) should have a negative delta, gamma and vega, and a positive theta.

* The text states, "Since 1986, long-term and short-term capital gains rates have been equal." (page 953). As long as I can remember, tax rates on long-term capital gains has been lower than on short-term. For tax year 2013 the maximum long-term rate is 15% and the maximum short-term rate is 35%.

This long review focuses on a very small portion of this very long book. Generally, this is a good book and it is reasonably-priced. Just keep in mind that the book is not perfect and contains information that was previously published.

Good Guide but not really worth a purchase | RealGamerNewz Review

Field Manual: This section offers some pretty in-depth information on Destiny's gameplay mechanics; from armor statistics and vehicles to the game's leveling system works as well as the its three unique character classes. The field manual's got you covered. Speaking of the Warlock, Titan and Hunter classes, the guide seemingly covers everything on them.

Each classes' grenade types, subclass and numerous abilities are explained with intricate detail, complete with tips and strategies for PVE and PVP gaming sessions. Want to know which of you Hunter's abilities are better suited for competitive play? Then the FM is the section you definitely want to check out.

The Missions: There are a ton of missions in Destiny and this hefty portion of the guide covers them all to a great degree, albeit not a perfect one. Every public event (Post launch), strike, patrols and story missions are expertly covered, with info on which enemies you face, how many, their weakpoints and effective strategies to take them down. In short you get a complete and accurate walkthrough of every mission. Where this section of the guide drops the ball however, is in its attempt to help players find Destiny's many collectibles.

Note* The Vault of Glass Raid -- which was released a week after the game, is briefly mentioned and doesn't the guide doesn't feature a walkthrough for it. It makes sense, I have no issue with that, just a heads up for those who get the game later and are interested in the guide.

Destiny features many items to collect scattered throughout the 5 locations within the game. There are two types; gold chests and dead ghosts. The descriptions on where to find the gold chests are well written and accurate but while there are 5 chests per planet (20 in total), only one or two include screenshots of their actual locations. Each planet features multiple sections players will travel to while playing and the guide features small slightly detailed maps that are presented in a top down view. Some the maps highlight the chest locations, but once it in a top down view which may make it annoying for some looking for a more detailed picture. Combine it with the fact that the maps are on separate pages, then players will be required to flip between multiple pages to check them and read the descriptions making it somewhat of a chore.

While the gold chests are highlighted on some of the maps and are given accurate descriptions, the dead ghosts aren't. Instead readers are given hints of the ghosts' locations. Yes hints, instead of detailed and accurate descriptions to help "guide" them, they are left with brief clues to go on. Some of them are really easy to figure out but players aren't looking to solves clues to find collectibles. That's something you would find in a video game as some sort of puzzle to provide a a sense of challenge. Doing so in a strategy guide is just slowing down the player and they do not want to be challenged while reading a strategy guide. Based on other guides which featured much more detailed info for finding in game collectibles, this is a poor way to handle it. You are better off searching the internet or Youtube. The writers seem a bit out of touch with their audience here.

Codex: Destiny has a variety of enemy combatants players will face off against and the codex features every single one of them. This comprehensive section covers each of their loadouts, behaviors on the battlefield, weakpoints (If they have any) and even offers some helpful tactics to make your time a little easier. There's also nicely detailed photos of Destiny's baddies to look at.

Armory: The meatiest portion of this strategy guide is the armory section. Learn everything there is to know about the countless in-game gear you can equip your guardian with for battle. Every weapon and armor mod is listed and detailed, providing info. Seemingly every uncommon, rare and legendary weapon is presented in the armory as well as their drop locations throughout the game.

That's not all, this section gets insane with the amount of weapons and mods statistics it features; from charts covering every weapon types reload speed, range and stability, to inventory ammo count and recoil patterns and that's not even all of it. It's a ridiculously impressive amount of content and information but at the same time it can be somewhat daunting to those who aren't statistics buffs.

Note* The stats for some weapons including the shotgun will change soon once Bungie releases their next patch, making a lot of their info inaccurate.

There's also a nice gallery for the game's exotic weapons and armor, though it seems as though the guide doesn't feature all of the weapons. At least one exotic weapon I know of, isn't in it.

Crucible: Destiny's crucible is the competitive multiplayer component and readers are treated with a very detailed overview of everything they need to know. Kevin Yanes one of Bungie's PvP designers, offers some pretty sound advice on the different game modes, his favored weapon loadouts and mods/class combinations.

Destiny's multiplayer includes 10 maps (11 for PS owners) and each one is given a detailed description of their layout, tips on how to effectively use the motion tracker and some smart tactics to help the player and his/her team come out on top. Unfortunately if you were expecting a huge amount of tactics/strategies for each maps, then you are out luck as you only get a few.

The annoying part about the Crucible coverage is in its photos of the maps. Sure there are some on each pages that show small sections of the mapshe pictures of the multiplayer maps are in a top down view with even less detail and color than those for the PvE missions. It is truly baffling that someone thought this was a good idea.

Trophies & Achievements: Every trophy and achievement that currently exists for Destiny is here. Just don't expect any tips on how to get the `Flawless Raider' T/A, the Vault of Glass is mentioned but not covered.

Digital Guide: In the back of the guide, is a free code for a digital copy that needs to be redeemed at www.primagames.com/code. Sadly I was hit with an invalid code message when trying to redeem it and upon further inspection across the internet, I learned this issue. Why so many copies were included with invalid codes is beyond me but if you do decide to pick this up and want to use the code, don't be surprised if you have to contact support for assistance.

Final Verdict - The writers at BradyGames put a lot of effort into this guide, there's no arguing that. The amount of detail and coverage is impressive, that's why it's rather disappointing to see them drop the ball when it comes to collectibles and in-game maps. One of the biggest reasons players use guides is so they can find them with ease, so refusing to put actual descriptions in favor of hints was a bad call.

There's also a small amount of tactics presented for the game's multiplayer maps. Add in the fact that this guide will become less and less accurate as the months go by thanks to patches and updated content, makes a little difficult to recommend. Anyone who picks up the game months from now will feel cheated in a way. If you are someone who still loves to purchase physical guides along with their games and care for every single section this one covers, then by all means, go for it. If not then you are better off searching online for those dead ghosts. It's a good guide but really worth it.

Online code a nice option for future games, but this guide is overall a miss

I've owned this guide for about two months. I don't write reviews but this time I felt I had to. I tend to buy these things because I want to go through a game and complete it as efficiently as possible-- I like going through, completing the story and clearing the gold achievements, playing some expansions and moving to the next. Having a paper guide is nice because I can flip through and jump to the relevant sections. The online guides have tons of potential (e.g. updating errors after the book goes to print, being instantly searchable takes up less shelf space and less clutter). We aren't quite there yet. The code option is good. I hope Brady keeps it up with other guides and that it will get better as they tweak that part.

As multiple people here have mentioned the code is disabled by default it seems. But yes, take a picture of the code and Brady within a day or two will activate it and link it up nicely to your username. Minor hassle but no big deal.

Here's what I like:
1. Decent general tips for the boss fights. You can get this online easily.
2. Full-color maps.
3. The combatant changes from normal to hard is good to know.
4. Seems well constructed. I buy these for many games and will continue to do so but maybe I haven't used this one that much but the pages haven't started falling out.

Here's what I don't like:
1. Really vague tips (e.g. ghost locations!! why no pictures and why the Bungie only hints awful). MUCH better stuff online. Where's the detail?
2. I'm frustrated that this guide just feels like mostly filler. I frequently open this up flop it back down and look online.
3. I can't figure out WHY like with most Brady games there isn't a blurb about stuff you can grab on the way from one section to the next (e.g. loot chests, ghosts).

I would skip this guide.

Great book, but eGuide code stolen

Just got it yesterday and its got everything you need to dig into the game. I found some useful information in 5 minutes that helped my character. HOWEVER. This book contains a code for a free online searchable & sortable eGuide at [...] that I was looking forward to so I could have my tablet while gaming. It said my code was already redeemed which is BS. I have the book and preordered it from Amazon months ago. The code should not be valid. I contacted primagames but no response yet. I'd give it more stars, and the book has more info and stats in it that I've seen anywhere online, but no code. So... order this for the book info, but consider the code has been stolen like mine was.

Loving this book!

I am loving this book--so I bought HG Wells Short History of the World, too.
The Outline is outstanding, I've read lots of history books--including Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything (an all-time favorite that I frequently give as a gift), but explanations in The Outline are often simpler and clearer than many others. At 1,000 pages you'd think there'd be a mass of extraneous details but the book covers so much ground that it never gets bogged down. If you need more, HG Wells also wrote companion books that delve deeper into related scientific areas.

This is one of the books that every educated person should read. This kind of knowledge is not available normally via the traditional media. To watch television for more than an hour a day (except for special sports events) seems to me to be self-abuse. Don't abuse ourself wtih useless information. Partake of the wine of sweet knowledge. Quirky entertainment in the form of a history

Iread this book about 50 years ago and enjoyed it immensely so decided to re-read the Kindle version. Because it's an outline, it doesn't belabor anything - Wells pretty much keeps thing moving. And the thing that I found entertaining is that Wells often editorializes. For example, talking about the foul odours eminating from early cave mens abodes (from such things as rotten meat) he compares it to the odours from some continental hotels. There are several things I DON'T like about this Kindle edition. It's full of typographical errors and there are literally hundreds of inappropriately placed commas throughout, making it often difficult to follow Well's very long sentences. I also deplore the fact that none of the scores of illustrations are included. To make matters worse, there are the titles of all of these so you know damned well what you're missing. About the Author
Burton J. Bogitsh received his undergraduate education in biology at New York University (University Heights) and his graduate education at Baylor University (M.A.) and the University of Virginia (Ph.D.). He is currently Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt University. He has authored more than 100 publications in the area of parasitology and has co-authored a textbook in General Zoology. He is an associate editor of the Journal of Morphology, co-editor of Volume 2 of the Microscopical Anatomy of Invertebrates, and has contributed many chapters to numerous edited volumes on parasitology. His research interests are in the ultrastructural localization of enzymes in helminths with a primary focus on the digestive tracts of trematodes.

Dr. Carter received his B.A. and M.A. degrees in biology at Loma Linda University and his Ph.D. degree at the University of California at Los Angeles. He is currently a Professor Biological Sciences at Vanderbilt University. He has authored more than 70 publications with a primary focus on the biochemistry and immunology of parasites. He has contributed chapters in several edited volumes such as The Biology of the Tapeworm, Hymenolepis diminuta, and has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Parasitology. His current research interests are centered on the host-parasite interactions of the causative agent of Chagas’ disease, Trypanosoma cruzi.

You Get What You Pay For (And not much else)

Like most general internists in America, I do not have much contact with parasitology. I bought the book to learn more about the topic and it fulfilled the expectation. It's a laundry list of organisms that have both a lot in common and their own idiosyncrasies. None of it is memorable and all of it can be obtained from reading any Internal Medicine textbook.

An outstanding self-study text for Medical Lab Technicians (MLT), Medical Lab Technologists (MT) / Medical Lab Scientists (MLS), and other Pathology students.

Parasitology as a whole is lightly touched on in MLT (associate level) and MT/MLS (Bachelors level) courses and certifications. This is a must read for anyone who works in a micro lab.

Clear and concise book with detailed monochrome diagrams and figures.

This is a fantastic book. It's not too dense and is actually quite readable. Each parasite has a complete summary including background, life cycle, clinical manifestations, detection methods, epidemiology, immunology and more. Similar to what other reviewers have said, most of the figures are colorless diagrams, but they are well-drawn and easy to follow. If self-studying, it would be best to pair with an atlas.

Highly recommended for anyone wishing to delve into the interesting realm of parasitology.

Nick Macari's The Working Writer's Guide to Comics and Graphic Novels is hands down the BEST book out on the craft of writing for comics and related sequential media. Sure there are other books by people with more recognizable names, but where their books live in concepts and theory, but in The Working Writer's Guide Nick puts his money where his mouth is and gets down to brass tacks about putting these concepts into ACTION. Few, if any of those other books give you how many words you should put in a panel to display how many is too many. Few of them show you a template for organizing your scripts. Those other may be good reads, but TWWG is an invaluable resource when it comes to the challenge of writing comic script that reads well and isn't cluttered. This book hasn't left my desk since it arrived and I refer to it whenever I am writing. The Working Writer's Guide is a golden resource for anyone interested in the business of comic books storytelling.

I have read pretty much every books about comic book writing from Eisner to Mc Cloud and Bendis and they
're all good but The Working Writer's Guide will take you to the next level. It explains writing comics in specific ways that everyone can use. I love this book. It should be part of your writing bibles collection, right on your desk.

This is excellent! This book not only goes over everything with detail and reasoning, but you always have an example - text or visual.

Born in 1975, Oliver Selway lives in Oxford, UK. Besides being a writer, Oliver is, as the Sunday Times described him, a ‘radical diet and fitness coach’. He gave up his job in journalism to retrain and change people’s lives after transforming his own body and health with a system that confounds the advice of conventional trainers and gyms. He wrote Instinctive Fitness to let people struggling to stay slim, healthy and energetic know that there is a better way than stress, striving and usually failing.
