Great maps indeed
By Yang Xiangkun
Great maps indeed. It's better than the Times one in my opinion. Just one problem: too many US maps.
there're tens of US maps including every detailed corner. now maybe it is not a problem, but when you find the book contains only 4 or 5 plates for South America which is much larger than the US, it is a problem.
I have compared, the map for Suriname is even less detailed than my micro pocket atlas which costs only 0.8 USD. This is really ridiculous.

We owned an older version and loved it as well
By William Trask
We owned an older version and loved it as well. This new edition brings us up-to-date with latest name changes, population shifts, etc. One change that is noticeable is that the small write-ups of countries is listed as an alphabetical group, rather than listed with the maps for that area; a minor irritation. The information and displays are excellent. In an ever changing world it is good to keep up with where and why things are happening. This tome helps...

Big enough to actually find historical places and locations
By Christopher T. Dahle
I previously bought the National Geographic "Family Reference Atlas of the World", which was big enough to impress people that you have a big atlas on the coffee table, but not big enough to actually FIND any historical locations you are interested in.

This one is much bigger and that means that if your kids are following the Jack Aubrey/Steven Maturin novels, you can actually FIND the various ports and places. When their teacher mentions poppies in the Flanders fields, you can point them out. You can locate Agincourt, the Maginot line, Hadrian's wall and the Battle of the Bulge. You can see how close Washington DC was to the Confederate lines. You can pick out the route of the transcontinental railway and show why the job was so much harder for the Central Pacific than for the UP. And if you are reading Around the World in Eighty Days, you can actually plot Phileas Fogg's route.

The scale is actually large enough

Over 1,300 symbols from all over the world are here categorized by visual type, divested of all agendas, meanings, and messages that might be associated with them so that the effectiveness of their composition and impact can be assessed without distraction and so that the reader can enjoy them as a pictorial language in their own right.

Every symbol is captioned with information on who it was designed for, who designed it, when, and what the symbol stands for. These sections are interspersed with short but detailed case studies featuring classic examples of symbols still in use, and exceptional examples of recently designed symbols.

This comprehensive volume is an indispensable resource for designers working on identity systems, and an engaging showcase of this exciting field. Now in a compact format.

Simplicity, neutrality, clarity, wit and a bit of playfulness = a great commercial symbol
By Robin
Put logo, trademark or symbol into Amazon search and you'll come up with a few hundred books that cover every aspect of the subject, from how to design them to copyright problems. The subject is now a staple in the design publishers catalog. Hyland and Bateman's book is a notch above most because they've stripped the subject down to the basics and look at symbols only, so there are no typographic and image marks like UPS; Dole; MetLife; Exxon or Coca Cola, for example.

The 1300 symbols in the book are divided into two sections: Abstract and Representational. These are subdivided into categories like stripes (fifteen examples) arrows (twenty-five) radiating/circular (twenty-three) sun (fourteen) birds (thirty-two) or hearts (twenty-two). I thought the Representational pages the most fascinating because designers have to use a familiar object and change it into a unique version for a company so it will be recognizable anywhere. Anything that has a curve to it (bird, heart, eye) seems to encourage designers to create some wonderful company brandmarks.

Scattered through the pages are some case histories (over two or three pages) where there is a closer look at selected company marks. These are the only pages that use color. All the symbols have credits for company, country, designer, date and a brief description of what the design is for.

There are a few hundred names, from around the world, in the designer index and Pentagram gets the most inclusions with sixty-two symbols, Chermayeff & Geismar get thirty-six and Karol Silwka (from Poland) gets thirty-one. Oddly the great designer Saul Bass only has one entry and Herb Lubalin none, I suppose because he was essentially a type man. There is a company and sector index also.

The book is a nice clean production with a maximum of nine images to a page. My only criticism is that the paper is a rather thick which makes the book a bit unwieldy while handling it. I think this is a worthwhile buy for design professionals and students.

Content five, binding zero
By Luigi Facotti
As reviewed in the WSJ, this is a very welcome addition to the field of logo design. One can quibble that some of the leading French, German and Swiss designers are not covered in greater detail - book seems very UK centric especially in the color spreads for the Underground, BOAC, etc.
The manufacture of the book is not so great (printed in China of course - whatever happened to the printing presses of the Western world?), binding fell apart 6 days outside the Amazon return date - not cheap and poorly assembled. Check your copy carefully if you decide to buy this.

A Must-Have in any Logo-Design Library
By R. Burr
Exactly what I was looking for, with ample references taken from around the world and divided into categories, and printed on heavy paper. Beautiful for idea stimulation. The only thing i would change would be to make the book physically taller and wider so it could be opened and examined without having to physically hold it open.

Aweeeeesome.
By K. Metzger
If you're looking for a comprehensive resource for NCLEX prep, look no further...this book is fantastic. Extensive topic coverage complete with rationales for every response. Prefer going online to take quizzes? No problem this book's got that, too. (Although the content online is a tad bit confusing to navigate, once you figure out how to get to the quizzes section, you won't forget.) I have several books for review and this one is my personal favorite. Some of my professors loan this text out to students, but I prefer 24/7 availability in my own home! :-) Happy studying, future nurses!

UPDATE: I saw sooo many reviewers having trouble getting to the online content to take system-specific quizzes that I decided to post instructions here on how to get to the right place.

1) Go to the Pearson Pegasus log-in page once you've set up online access, and log in.
2) Click on the book title on the left side of the website.
3) On the next page, on the left side near the top, you will see a menu bar that has the following options: "Today's View, Course Content, Grades, Communicate". Look just BELOW this menu bar and you will see the following options: "View All Content, Course Calendar, Learning Objectives."
4) Click on Learning Objectives.
5) On the left side, you will see the following options: "Client Need, Topics Areas, Integrated Process."
6) To take quizzes related to your system or topic of choice, click the plus sign for "Topics Areas".
7) Click on your system of choice.
8) On the right side, there are several options for that topic of study. Scroll down to the bottom-ish. You will see a heading called "Self Study" for that topic of study. Click on it.
9) A separate pop-up window will appear so that you may begin your quiz.

I hope this is helpful. If you have any problems or questions, feel free to comment below. Note that the online quiz portion only works with Internet Explorer and certain versions of Firefox, but not with Chrome.

Breezed through nursing school
By Barb S., Public Affairs Professional
The Hogan book is one of two resources that I depended on from Block 1 to Block 4. I did so well in school, that almost everyone in my class asked me what I was doing, and I recommended this book.... even better -- in block 4, make sure and use the CDs -- this is how I passed block 4 respiratory and cardiac. BTW, I used all of the other hogan books (audio) and listened in the car. I should be on their marketing team.

Easy to understand and simple content
By Ma Katrina Yongque
I am an International graduate and to tell you honestly it has been hard for me to just even start studying. I've tried Saunder's, Kaplan, Mosby's, Davis', name it all. But, of all the books I've read, this book helped me a lot not only in terms of learning the theory and acquiring nursing knowledge and wisdom, it has also nurtured me on practicing my answering skills. The questions inside this book are really hard which I think is a good thing cause it makes you think more. Also, a lot of the questions are similar to the NCEX RN Exam. Trust me, this book explains everything you need to know in a convenient and easy manner. This is the only book that sharpened my mind and it prepared me for my NCLEX RN Exam. Two thumbs up for this book!!

A Guide To Modeling Coastal Morphology (Advances in Coastal and Ocean Engineering), by Dano Roelvink, Ad Reniers

Process-based morphodynamic Modeling is one of the relatively new tools at the disposal of coastal scientists, engineers and managers. On paper, it offers the possibility to analyse morphological processes and to investigate the effects of various measures one might consider to alleviate some problems. For these to be applied in practice, a model should be relatively straightforward to set up. It should be accurate enough to represent the details of interest, it should run long enough and robustly to see the real effects happen, and the physical processes represented in such a way that the sediment generally goes in the right direction at the right rate. Next, practitioners must be able to judge if the patterns and outcomes of the model are realistic and finally, translate these colour pictures and vector plots to integrated parameters that are relevant to the client or end user. In a nutshell, this book provides an in-depth review of ways to model coastal processes, including many hands-on exercises.

King Richard III (Arden Shakespeare), by William Shakespeare

Richard III is one of the great Shakespearean characters and roles. James R Siemon examines the attraction of this villain to audiences and focuses on how beguiling, even funny, he can be, especially in the earlier parts of the play. Siemon also places King Richard III in its historical context; as Elizabeth I had no heirs the issue of succession was a very real one for Shakespeare's audience. The introduction is well-illustrated and provides a comprehensive account of the play, critical approaches to it and its varied stage history.

The edition also provides a clear and authoritative playtext, edited to the most rigorous standards of scholarship, with detailed notes and commentary on the same page. With a wealth of helpful and incisive commentary the Arden Shakespeare is the finest edition of Shakespeare you can find, giving a deeper understanding and appreciation of his work.

Review

“A detailed, scholarly introduction...Siemon delivers impressively...particularly in the in-depth annotations that crowd the 290 pages of text in this epic history play....Commentary and collations...necessary notes, providing historical context, chronology, and pedigrees, a pattern that is repeated throughout this edition.

Siemon's notes are elaborate when appropriate, and consolidated...when necessary...He authoritatively charts its historical contexts and complex theatrical afterlife.” ―Around the Globe magazine

Almost A Tragedy
By Dora Benley
Almost A Tragedy: Richard III by Shakespeare
We saw a RADA performance of Richard III last summer on the Queen Mary 2 sailing across the North Atlantic to Southampton. I was struck by how tragic the play is even if it is supposed to be one of the histories. It reminds me of Macbeth. Richard aspires to be king the way Macbeth does. He commits crimes and must pay the price. In the end he dies defending his kingdom, again like Macbeth. Macbeth must fight the woods that come to Dunsinane. Richard cries out, "A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!" while carrying on a battle against Richmond. In the RADA production's staging we saw underlined the ever-growing dark quality of the drama: flowers were laid on the stage by the gravestone of the newest victim. Richard's wife, Anne, grieves for her sins in marrying Richard and being seduced by him even as Lady Macbeth goes mad. The ghosts of the slain rise up against Richard in his sleep before his end while Macbeth is always grappling with witches and the supernaturalMacbeth. Of course the only reason Richard III doesn't number among the Shakespearian tragedies is because of Tudor politics. Richard was on the wrong side in the Wars of the Roses. He was the enemy of Queen Elizabeth's family. Shakespeare was forced to render the character of Richard in two dimensions instead of three.

Richard III (folger library edition)
By Alan M. Shearer
I chose this Folger edition of the play because I have used these editions ever since I was a drama student in high school. I always like the way the footnotes and definitions of obscure words are interspersed with each page of text. These are among the most readable editions because one can quickly find the footnotes while reading, without interrupting the reading to flip to another page. Footnotes tend to be very small in print in some other editions, as well. The type set or font here is of a size that makes for ease in reading.
Of course, one should read many of the fine editions of other paperback and hardbound publications of Shakespeare to get to know the plays in depth. But the Folger PB copies are well-priced, and a very good choice for a first reading of any play.

Scientists discover bones – Playwrights discover souls
By ChooChooCharlie
They can find bones but not the spirit. That was my thought when reading today’s newspaper and encountering an article describing the controversy over where the found remains of King Richard III should be interred. Yes, scientific analysis indicated his body was probably deformed due to scoliosis. However, only the master of the English language could discover Richard’s lament that ‘dogs bark at me as I halt by them’. Thus the motive for Richard’s villainous nature is established in Shakespeare’s play Richard III. Means and opportunity come easy to the royal knave whose evil mantra removes the handcuffs of restraint with the pithy observation that ‘Conscience is but a word that cowards use’. The picture is painted, the colors are words and Shakespeare is the artist.

I thoroughly enjoyed re-reading the play Richard III on my Kindle e-book device. The instant access to e-dictionaries made reading Shakespeare easier compared to reading my print version where the thought process is more readily interrupted by the length of time required to look up the definition of a word. English words are the linchpins of Shakespeare’s artistry so understanding their meanings are essential to the overall enjoyment of his works.

Since Richard III is historical fiction one must be reasonable in making historical judgments. I consider my following judgment of King Richard III a fair conclusion. Whereas Johnson was lucky to have his Boswell, King Richard III was unlucky to have his Shakespeare. For the rest of us, we were very lucky.

Slip behind the Iron Curtain into a world of smoke, secrets, and lies in this stunning novel where someone is always listening and nothing is as it seems.

Noah Keller has a pretty normal life, until one wild afternoon when his parents pick him up from school and head straight for the airport, telling him on the ride that his name isn’t really Noah and he didn’t really just turn eleven in March. And he can’t even ask them why — not because of his Astonishing Stutter, but because asking questions is against the newly instated rules. (Rule Number Two: Don’t talk about serious things indoors, because Rule Number One: They will always be listening). As Noah—now "Jonah Brown"—and his parents head behind the Iron Curtain into East Berlin, the rules and secrets begin to pile up so quickly that he can hardly keep track of the questions bubbling up inside him: Who, exactly, is listening — and why? When did his mother become fluent in so many languages? And what really happened to the parents of his only friend, Cloud-Claudia, the lonely girl who lives downstairs? In an intricately plotted novel full of espionage and intrigue, friendship and family, Anne Nesbet cracks history wide open and gets right to the heart of what it feels like to be an outsider in a world that’s impossible to understand.

From School Library Journal
Gr 5–8—Fifth grader Noah Keller is surprised when both his parents pick him up from school and astonished when they tell him that his mother has been granted permission to do "dissertation research" in East Germany for six months—and that they're leaving immediately and temporarily changing their names. After learning "The Rules, as Explained by Noah's Mother," which include statements such as "they will always be listening and often be watching" and "don't ever talk about serious things indoors; in particular, never refer to people by name," Noah (now called Jonah) arrives in East Berlin with his family. A new friend, tragedy, and burgeoning suspicion about Noah's parents play out in a subtle and well-paced story about the months leading up to the fall of the Berlin Wall. Tension mounts as Noah continues to gain an understanding of the fear and desperation people feel, while readers are privy to "Secret Files" that provide historical context. Multidimensional characters are developed piece by piece to keep mystery and curiosity alive. Noah and his parents share a loving bond that grounds the plot and provides a shelter from the uncertainty and confusion Noah often feels in light of unfamiliar surroundings and jarring situations. Nesbet writes an interesting and nuanced narrative that weaves history, mystery, and friendship with enough action to keep readers engaged. VERDICT A great choice for those looking for a thrilling historical fiction or coming-of-age tale.—Kelsey Johnson-Kaiser, St. Paul Public Library.

Review
In this atmospheric page-turner set just as the Iron Curtain begins to lift, Nesbet deftly ratchets up the tension, using a close third-person omniscient narration to keep readers experiencing one unnerving event after another, just as Noah does...This is edgy, dramatic, and emotionally rich historical fiction that provides a vivid look into an extraordinary moment in history.
—Horn Book (starred review)

[Nesbet's] author's note reveals the personal history behind the novel, suggesting a labor of love that does show in the carefully crafted details and effective scene-setting...Nesbet's detail-rich novel offers tenacious readers an interesting window into the fall of the Iron Curtain.
—Kirkus Reviews

Nesbet writes an interesting and nuanced narrative that weaves history, mystery, and friendship with enough action to keep readers engaged. A great choice for those looking for a thrilling historical fiction or coming-of-age tale.
—School Library Journal

Nesbet gives readers a glimpse into life behind the Iron Curtain...Noah’s friendship with his neighbor Claudia is genuinely touching, and some truly tense scenes unfold as secrets are revealed and readers witness events leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
—Booklist

Through Noah’s innocent but perceptive eyes, readers receive a first-hand look at this secretive and highly controlled world. Post-chapter "Secret Files" provide fascinating historical context, but the story’s heart lies in the friendship between Claudia and Noah, and in the lengths loved ones will go to in order to break down even the most formidable walls.
—Publishers Weekly

Nesbet cleverly contextualizes events via "Secret Files" ... that follow each chapter, drawing fact and fiction together into entertaining little bundles.
—Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

Told from the perspective of an eleven-year-old, the sounds, sights, and smells of East Berlin come vividly to life...Jonah is both credible and endearing. Even when his parents are secretive, he attempts to do the right thing. Side bars list pertinent historical facts. This makes an enlightening and inspiring choice for classroom units or book discussions.
—VOYA

Nesbet somehow manages to bring East Germany in 1989 to full-blown, fascinating life.
—A Fuse #8 Production (blog)

Stunning. I cant' stop thinking about this one - great for kids who enjoyed A Night Divided.

“None of us can safely be Alice … when it’s our friends who are cards in the desk.”
By E. R. Bird
Historical fiction is boring. Right? That’s the common wisdom on the matter, certainly. Take two characters (interesting), give them a problem (interesting), and set them in the past (BOOOOOORING!). And to be fair, there are a LOT of dull-as-dishwater works of historical fiction out there. Books where a kid has to wade through knee-deep descriptions, dates, facts, and superfluous details. But there is pushback against this kind of thinking. Laurie Halse Anderson, for example, likes to call her books (“Chains”, “Forge”, “Ashes”, etc.) “historical thrillers”. People are setting their books in unique historical time periods. And finally (and perhaps most importantly) we’re seeing a lot more works of historical fiction that are truly fun to read. Books like “The War That Saved My Life” by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley, or "One Crazy Summer" by Rita Williams-Garcia, or “My Near-Death Adventures” by Alison DeCamp, or ALL of Louise Erdrich’s titles for kids. Better add “Cloud and Wallfish” by Anne Nesbet to that list as well. Doing what I can only characterize as the impossible, Nesbet somehow manages to bring East Germany in 1989 to full-blown, fascinating life. Maybe you wouldn't want to live there, but it's certainly worth a trip.

His name is Noah. Was Noah. It’s like this, one minute you’re just living your life, normal as you please, and the next your parents have informed you that your name is a lie, your birth date is wrong, and you’re moving to East Berlin. The year is 1989 and as Noah (now Jonah)’s father would say, there’s a definite smell of history in the air. His mother has moved the family to this new city as part of her research into education and stuttering (an impediment that Noah shares) for six months. But finding himself unable to attend school in a world so unlike the one he just left, the boy is lonely. That’s why he’s so grateful when the girl below his apartment, Claudia, befriends him. But there are secrets surrounding these new friends. How did Claudia’s parents recently die? Why are Noah’s parents being so mysterious? And what is going on in Germany? With an Iron Curtain shuddering on its foundations, Noah’s not just going to smell that history in the air. He’s going to live it, and he’s going to get a friend out of the bargain as well.

It was a bit of a risk on Nesbet’s part to begin the book by introducing us to Noah’s parents right off the bat as weirdly suspicious people. It may take Noah half a book to create a mental file on his mom, but those of us not related to the woman are starting our own much sooner. Say, from the minute we meet her. It was very interesting to watch his parents upend their son’s world and then win back his trust by dint of their location as well as their charm and evident love. It almost reads like a dare from one author to another. “I bet you can’t make a reader deeply distrust a character’s parents right from the start, then make you trust them again, then leave them sort of lost in a moral sea of gray, but still likable!” Challenge accepted!

Spoiler Alert on This Paragraph (feel free to skip it if you like surprises): Noah’s mom is probably the most interesting parent you’ll encounter in a children’s book in a long time. By the time the book is over you know several things. 1. She definitely loves Noah. 2. She’s also using his disability to further her undercover activities, just as he fears. 3. She incredibly frightening. The kind of person you wouldn’t want to cross. She and her husband are utterly charming but you get the distinct feeling that Noah’s preternatural ability to put the puzzle pieces of his life together is as much nature as it is nurture. Coming to the end of the book you see that Noah has sent Claudia postcards over the years from places all over the world. Never Virginia. One could read that a lot of different ways but I read it as his mother dragging him along with her from country to country. There may never be a “home” for Noah now. But she loves him, right? I foresee a lot of really interesting bookclub discussions about the ending of this book, to say nothing about how we should view his parents.

As I mentioned before, historical fiction that’s actually interesting can be difficult to create. And since 1989 is clear-cut historical fiction (this is the second time a character from the past shared my birth year in a children's book . . . *shudder*) Nesbet utilizes several expository techniques to keep young readers (and, let’s face it, a lot of adult readers) updated on what precisely is going on. From page ten onward a series of “Secret Files” boxes will pop up within the text to give readers the low-down. These are written in a catchy, engaging style directly to the reader, suggesting that they are from the point of view of an omniscient narrator who knows the past, the future, and the innermost thoughts of the characters. So in addition to the story, which wraps you in lies and half-truths right from the start to get you interested, you have these little boxes of explanation, giving you information the characters often do not have. Some of these Secret Files are more interesting than others, but as with the Moby Dick portions in Louis Sachar’s “The Cardturner”, readers can choose to skip them if they so desire. They should be wary, though. A lot of pertinent information is sequestered in these little boxes. I wouldn’t cut out one of them for all the wide wide world.

Another way Nesbet keeps everything interesting is with her attention to detail. The author that knows the minutia of their fictional world is an author who can convince readers that it exists. Nesbet does this by including lots of tiny details few Americans have ever known. The pirated version of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” that was disseminated for years throughout the German Democratic Republic? I had no idea. The listing of television programs available there? Very funny. Even the food you could get in the grocery store and the smell of the coal-choked air feels authentic.

Of course, you can load your book down with cute boxes and details all day and still lose a reader if they don't relate to the characters. Noah could easily be reduced to one of those blank slate narrators who go through a book without a clear cut personality. I'm happy to report that this isn't the case here. And I appreciated the Claudia was never a straight victim or one of those characters that appears impervious to the pain in her life. Similarly, Noah is a stutterer but the book never throws the two-dimensional bully in his path. His challenges are all very strange and unique to his location. I was also impressed by how Nesbet dealt with Claudia’s German (she makes up words or comes up with some Noah has never heard of and so Nesbet has the unenviable job of making that clear on the page). By the same token, Noah has a severe stutter, but having read the whole book I’m pretty sure Nesbet only spells the stutter out on the page once. For every other time we’re told about it after the fact or as it is happening.

I’ve said all this without, somehow, mentioning how lovely Nesbet’s writing is. The degree to which she’s willing to go deep into her material, plucking out the elements that will resonate the most with her young readers, is masterful. Consider a section that explains what it feels like to play the role of yourself in your own life. “This is true even for people who aren’t crossing borders or dealing with police. Many people in middle school, for instance, are pretending to be who they actually are. A lot of bad acting is involved.” Descriptions are delicious as well. When Claudia comes over for dinner after hearing about the death of her parents Nesbet writes, “Underneath the bristles, Noah could tell, lurked a squishy heap of misery.”

There’s little room for nuance in Nesbet’s Berlin, that’s for sure. The East Berliners we meet are either frightened, in charge, or actively rebelling. In her Author’s Note Nesbet writes about her time in the German Democratic Republic in early 1989, noting where a lot of the details of the book came from. She also mentions the wonderful friends she had there at that time. Noah, by the very plot in which he finds himself, would not be able to meet these wonderful people. As such, he has a black-and-white view of life in East Berlin. And it’s interesting to note that when his classmates talk up the wonders of their society, he never wonders if anything they tell him is true. Is everyone employed? At what price? There is good and bad and if there is nuance it is mostly found in the characters like Noah’s mother. Nesbet herself leaves readers with some very wise words in her Author’s Note when she says to child readers, “Truth and fiction are tangled together in everything human beings do and in every story they tell. Whenever a book claims to be telling the truth, it is wise (as Noah’s mother says at one point) to keep asking questions.” I would have liked a little more gray in the story, but I can hardly think of a better lesson to impart to children in our current day and age.

In many way, the book this reminded me of the most was Katherine Paterson’s “Bridge to Terabithia”. Think about it. A boy desperate for a friend meets an out-of-the-box kind of girl. They invent a fantasyland together that’s across a distinct border (in this book Claudia imagines it’s just beyond the Wall). Paterson’s book was a meditation on friendship, just like Nesbet’s. Yet there is so much more going on here. There are serious thoughts about surveillance (something kids have to think about a lot more today), fear, revolution, loyalty, and more than all this, what you have to do to keep yourself sane in a world where things are going mad. “Alice Through the Looking Glass" is referenced repeatedly, and not by accident. Noah has found himself in a world where the rules he grew up with have changed. As a result he must cling to what he knows to be true. Fortunately, he has a smart author to help him along the way. Anne Nesbet always calls Noah by his own name, even when her characters don’t. He is always Noah to us and to himself. That he finds himself in one of the most interesting and readable historical novels written for kids is no small thing. Nesbet outdoes herself. Kids are the beneficiaries.

For ages 9 and up.

Utterly brilliant!
By Stephanie Samphire
This book is utterly BRILLIANT. It's exhilaratingly smart and fun, a wild ride from the very beginning, when 11-year-old Noah is picked up from school in Virginia by his parents only to be told his name isn't really Noah, he isn't really 11 after all, and they're heading to East Berlin (this is set in 1989, when the Wall was still up) IMMEDIATELY, using an all-new set of names and a made-up history he urgently has to memorize....oh, and that from now on, he can't ask any questions, because SOMEONE will always be listening from the moment they arrive in East Berlin!

It's a fascinating and enormously fun story full of secrets and codes and mysteries, the setting is incredibly rich...and oh, the emotional developments as Noah makes a true friend in one of his neighbors and is drawn into her own painful and mysterious story!

This was an utterly compulsive read from beginning to end, I enjoyed every moment of it, and the ending made me cry in a very, very good way.

I LOVED this book. The first thing I did when I finished reading was open up the Cybils nomination page, because I wanted to nominate it for the best MG (non-speculative-)fiction book of the year. But of course someone else had already nominated it! It really does deserve to win all of the awards.

I haven't been so blown away by any book I've read for a very, very long time.

Decorative Alphabets and Initials (Lettering, Calligraphy, Typography)From Dover Publications

This unusual Dover publication presents a singular opportunity to the artist, crafter, designer, illustrator, printer, or other user of letter designs to have always at hand a rich store of inspiration and a swipe-file. More important, you may reproduce any initial or alphabet in this volume free of charge, without asking permission. The work is all royalty-free; when you buy the book, you buy the reproduction rights to any individual part of it. The price is less than you would pay to professional archives for one copy of the letter.
There are 123 full-page plates including 91 complete alphabets in widely differing styles. In all, there are 3,924 initial letters. These alphabets were obtained from rare, out-of-print books, generally available only in libraries or in the rare-book market. They were reproduced directly from the pages of a large and expensive collection that was made specifically for the production of this volume. Since they are direct reproductions, they will all reproduce again excellently.
The book has been carefully arranged and annotated by the compiler so that the student of letters and types may have a complete understanding of decorative alphabets and initials. The work is divided into three parts. Part One deals entirely with manuscript initials as they were used from the eighth to the fifteenth centuries. It includes Celtic initials, rare designs from the Bible of Charles the Bald, and incised letters from the monument of Richard II in Westminster Abbey. Part Two contains initials from printed books, starting with the fifteenth century and running through the eighteenth. Here are the fanciful creations of the sixteenth-century woodcutters; initials illustrated with children, cherubs, birds, beasts, flowers, legends, and grotesque heads. The work of the later engravers, writing masters, and baroque and rococo designers follows in order. Part Three attempts to arrange the "great weedy jungle" of Victorian letters and types and concludes with twentieth-century alphabets such as the distinctive wood engraving of Edward Wadsworth. Each section has a historical introduction, and each plate has a descriptive caption.

Great resource book for Calligraphers, and Penwork Doodling Artists
By PenandInk
This book is a great resource for calligrapher, doodling artists, lettering artists that need a copyright-FREE book for inspiring their creativity.

The book shows the contour lines of the initials letters where the artist used the positive and negative shapes of the letter form to draw patterns. The book starts with the 8th century and ends in the beginning of the 20th century. This is a great resource book to add to your library if you love working in the contour of the outline of the alphabets and initials letter forms. This book works for me as a calligrapher and also as a Doodling Artist that specialize in working in the positive and negative contour lines of a letter form using geometric shapes and ink silhouette shading.

My favor plate is Plate 29 which the author describes "Letter surrounded by penwork doodling-from a 16th-century chorale, Monte Cassino.

I also use this book to challenge my art skills, for example plates 102 and plate 117 are full with penwork doodling.

I highly recommend this book to anyone that loves decorative alphabets and initials.
