John P. Miller is a professor in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto. He is the author or editor of 17 books on holistic learning and contemplative practices in education.

John (Jack) Miller is a professor in the Centre for Teacher Development at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto. With expertise and writings in holistic learning and contemplative practices in education (including the books Education and the Soul, Educating for Wisdom and Compassion, Holistic Learning And Spirituality In Education: Breaking New Ground, and Whole Child Education), he is uniquely suited to write this seminal book in holistic education. This book provides a context of the dialogue and history about holistic approaches to education, as well as outlining practices that support implementing and evaluating this approach.
Miller embeds his writing in the definition that holistic education attempts to move past modernist methods, by “bringing education into alignment with the fundamental realities of nature” and healing multiple levels of fragmentation from our connectedness with our world (economic, social, psychological and philosophic/spiritual).
I appreciate the balance of theoretical writing with practice ideas for operationalizing the theory in an educational context. From ways to increase intuitive connections, to community and earth connections, to soul connections, there are ideas that can be applied to a wide variety of teaching and learning settings. This makes this book useful to academics looking for a discussion of the larger context of holistic curriculum as well as practicing educators at all levels (K-12 and post secondary) and settings (formal and informal).
John Miller writes in an accessible way, embedding references of other important writers and theorists in this area. Overall, I believe this book offers an important voice to the overall discussions of holistic, transformational, and integral curriculum development.
