Best on the topic

The Dutch scholar, Tjeu van den Berg, has written a brilliant summary of all that C.G. Jung wrote about art and the creative process that lies behind the making of art. More than that, he offers a coherent depth psychological theory of art based on Jung's writings. He is conversant with the secondary literature on this topic but does not rely on it. Rather, he bases his observations on the original writings of Jung and weaves them together into a coherent account. This work is highly readable by non-specialists and offers anyone interested in the creative process valuable insights. For the ordinary art fan and appreciator, it opens the eyes to deeper dimensions of seeing and understanding. If one is going to read only one book on this topic. this is the book to have.

excellent overview

I am fairly conversant with Jung and found this book to be a thorough overview of Jung's views on art in general. There is an analysis of abstract art in the last few chapters which are penetrating and though Jung did not like abstraction he made many penetrating comments on its relevance to the modern world. The reader will benefit if there is interest in Analytical Psychology.

Nice book with a cool concept

Ordered on my Prime account and arrived one day early. Nice book with a cool concept. Its not like a typical anatomy or physiology coloring book that your probably thinking about. This is an intro level text book. However, rather than the typical text reference to a picture, this book is written with instructions for the student to color the diagrams themselves to reinforce the learning. Also, the diagrams aren't the typical diagrams that you see in text books. These pictures and diagrams are drawn specifically for the text. For example, as the text is describing something like the Flight or Fight response, the student is coloring a picture per text instruction showing the whole response including the endocrine system along with the autonomic nervous system. And the drawing instructions included in the text have you color it in a beginning to end fashion of the response cycle. I think its a pretty cool book. It is an intro level text however. So if your an advanced student in premed or something like that, its probably to basic for you.

I enjoy many an hour of review and fun with coloring. Only a few suggestions:
Could the quality of paper be improved? Just a bit better so the imprint does not pass through the back of the page. No big deal.
If at all possible, could the outlines, black drawings, be done just a bit lighter in order to allow the coloring pencils more room??
Coloring all the names can become boring, why not allow a box to be filled with the chosen color. The letters, small. tiny, insignificant letters at the end of the names (A A1 b b1 b2 etc) could be made more presentable, made to carry the idea?? !!

Books are great idea, I wish we had them some 40 years ago!!!!

Even more facts could be added on the review side.

Looked brand new to me

Got the book and it was in excellent - brand new condition. If it had ever been "used" before it is impossible to tell.
Since I am a very visual person, I like the general idea of the book and how it works.
When you are using markers, (which work best), depending on which colors you choose they can bleed through the pages and make the backside of the page hard to read. On some pages the drawings are so detailed and specific you have to use a ton (10 +) of colors and it makes using colored pencils just too hard.
I found myself getting caught up in the "fun" of coloring the diagrams and not really paying attention to them, which made me go back over everything once I was done "coloring". So I guess that could be a good thing too though...
Overall, I do recommend it as a study tool for visual learners.

Extraordinary Beyond the Title, a must for all Math Lovers

The sad thing about this series is that the keywords that invite readers to stop by, hide the fact that these texts go far beyond music, to USE music as a gentle introduction to extremely complex, relevant and timely math concepts. The best teachers use four paths to explain a math concept: verbal, formulaic, algorithmic and pictographic. These help the brain comprehend the topic regardless of our learning modality. The authors here are simply MASTERFUL math teachers, and clarify everything from Eulers Law (relation of e, the base of the natural logarithms to pi, the base of the trig functions) to Fourier Transforms, in a way that a bright High School student will get. If you've been out of math (any math) for a long time, and want a masterful review of math concepts and techniques, this series is THE place to start. You can then extend that foundation to many other applied areas, from signal processing to physics, voice recognition, etc. Fourier transforms (and their more recent spin off in Cepstrums) are being used in too many fields to list today, from radar and electronic engineering, to whale songs.

In every section, the author's excitement is contagious. Rather than give a bunch of dry proofs that reek of hubris and disregard for the reader, Gareth uses a "curious mind" tone, as if he were just learning and discovering this too, like a kind of puzzle or murder mystery. Loy is Monk, Holmes and Columbo combined. For example, he gives a few expansion series for e, then says: "Wow, there seems to be a striking and beautiful pattern here, doesn't there? Wonder what it can be?" Leave it to a guy into both math and music to see the wonder in a time series!

One more example. Any texts on waveforms have to involve deep calculus, especially PDE's. Unfortunately, deep PDE's don't happen until grad school. But, rather than assume the reader uses calculus all day long, Loy starts with the basics at "now let's see how the first derivative is actually slope finding and integration is the area covered by the moving curve..." including those perhaps more musically inclined who have forgotten what a derivative is. Astonishingly, Loy sneaks around the dry topic of limits to use MUSIC as a great practical refesher on calculus (p. 263 of the second volume, in the section that is the hottest topic in Physics today, from Astronomy to Medical Imaging to of course music: Resonance).

Gareth is one of the few mathematicians around who can relate math to the astonishment of life around us. After all, our brain is doing advanced Fourier Transforms every time we cross a street in traffic, and when we get an MRI, the Fourier Transforms that convert magnetic alignment to pictures are assuming that the atoms in our body are a song, which when pulsed with a radio wave, will sing the positions of their water molecules back to us in harmonics that can be seen as well as heard.

Highly recommend this series, not only for everyone interested in math and music, but math and life!

Math and music

I have always wondered about the differences between a note played on different instruments, and how this affects the sound wave, and this book explained this well. I am a computer geek considering a programming project involving music. This book gave me the background I was looking form, but does not cover any of the programming aspects of real time midi input and sound output.

There is quite a bit of math and physics in the book and I did skip quite a bit of it.
There is also quite a lot of information on different scales and changes in the frequency of notes through history.
I took piano lessons as a kid, but don't have a good understanding of the different keys and scales so this was tough for me, but also very interesting.

About the Author
Arvind Narayanan is assistant professor of computer science at Princeton University. Joseph Bonneau is a postdoctoral researcher at the Applied Cryptography Group at Stanford University. Edward Felten is director of Princeton's Center for Information Technology Policy. Andrew Miller is a PhD student in computer science at the University of Maryland. Steven Goldfeder is a PhD student in computer science at Princeton.

Solid Introduction to Bitcoin and Crypto-Currencies

This book does a nice job of explaining Bitcoin and crypto-currency technologies. The start of the book discusses technologies preceding Bitcoin and why many of these systems failed. From there the building blocks of how Bitcoin evolved were discussed. These sections were excellent; describing the main innovations of Bitcoin and how they were woven together to create Bitcoin.

Wallets and mining are introduced and explained. Many different possible attack vectors on bitcoin were discussed. The balance was pretty good here between a technical discussion and a casual discussion. Most parts of the book are accessible to technical and non-technical people.

Legal implications of Bitcoin are discussed in Chapter 7. I thought sections here relied too heavily on news stories and anecdotes.

In the final chapters many different alternative coins and technologies that overlay on the Bitcoin block-chain were introduced. I was pleased to see the innovative altcoins each had something about them including Ethereum. Drawbacks of certain altcoins were discussed but overall the authors did not show any favoritism to certain coins which was nice.

I am giving the book 4-stars though because the writing in certain sections, along with word choice was not well suited for a printed book. For example Chapter 5 was entitled "Bitcoin Mining" and the first sentence of the chapter (p.104) is: "This chapter is all about mining", and the final sentence to the chapter introduction was: "In this chapter, we answer all these questions.". These sentences contain basically no information at all, and I found this pattern repeated throughout the book. In one place a technology was described as "cool".

Overall, the content is a great introduction to crypto-curriences but the authors could use some work on their penmanship.

Welcome to the Worlds of Zahn

Like many people, I was introduced to Timothy Zahn through the Thrawn Trilogy of Star Wars novels that essentially laid the groundwork for the Expanded Universe. I was aware that he wrote other science fiction, but had never really read any of his other stuff.
A friend handed me Cascade Point, a collection of short stories that launched Zahn's career.
Each story is entertaining and self contained (with one caveat, there is one story that is a direct sequel of the previous story.) Each has its seed in an interesting idea or concept that Zahn wants to explore, but is given depth by exploration of the human condition and our role in society.
On the outside, there are stories of extra sensory perception, black holes, alternate realities, space exploration and other tropes one might expect in a science fiction collection. Look a layer deeper and they are stories about isolation, connecting with others, adjusting to having your job become obsolete, searching for the truth in life's questions and coming to grips with where you are in life.
Zahn tackles social issues including abortion and genetic experimentation and even predicts the rise of online gaming communities, communal content creation and competition decades before they became daily realities.
If you are looking to explore worlds or the inner self, you are in the right place, and what an entertaining place it is too.

A highly enjoyable read

A selection of short stories based on a science fiction theme. This book is highly recommened and it is a complete shame that it's out of print.

"The Giftie Gie Us" is about a post apocalyptic world where justice is won the hard way and love is even harder to find.

"The Dreamsender" is a story about a possible future where very special people can go into others dreams and send messages, or just talk to them. "Dreamsending" doesn't seem to have anything to do with time and space...meaning that a person can just as easily send messages across the galaxy as they can to their next door neighbor. So when a conspiracy happens on the moon and men seem to be kidnapped how do they get messages in and out of their prison?

"The Challenge" is about humanities obsession with video games and an alien race watching us from the outside.

"The Cassandra" is about humans that can see disasters and death in the future. Sometimes their predictions are right, usually they're not. Or so people assumed....

"Dragon Pax" is about what happens to a planet after mankind has had a war that turned human civilization throughout the universe into chaos. On this planet there is a ruler called the Dragonmaster. This man has absolute power over gigantic dragons that can cause death and mayhem to anyone he desires. Does this man really want to have the kind of government he has for this country or will he make someone stand forward to help bring democracy to this world?

"Job Inaction" is about a future Earth where people get jobs based on a lottery rather then work experience, or education. In this future world a man is fired because of a computer glitch and he must find a way to either get his job back or make money some other way.

"Teamwork" is about an alien spacecraft that lands on Earth and makes humans into slaves. A special group of people must go in and destroy the craft and save the humans aboard.

"The Final Report on the Lifeline Experiment" is about a psychic man that decides to find out when humans have human thought patterns. The consequences of his actions are unforeseen by him or anyone else until years in the future.

"Cascade Point" is about a space ship lost in time and space and what they have to do to get back to their Earth.

A good intro to Zahn

An excellent collection of early short fiction by Zahn. I particularly liked "Shadows of Evening" and the sequel "Not only to the Strong". Some stories are clearly showing a writer still learning his craft, but are still very good, and the title story is top-notch.

Bright Minds, Poor Grades

This is an excellent book for the parents of G/T students who are not bringing home the great grades they are capable of making. I have a 12 year old who tests in the 99 percentile on acheivement tests, is a Duke Tip student that received state recognition for his SAT scores as a 7th grader. His grades were C's, D's and F's. His teachers wanted him out of G/T classes but the Counselor and Principal realized that he would do worse in regular classes since G/T classes allow students to be more creative but-- this requires independence on the students part. His problems are with being independent and reponsible for his grades. This book has been amazing in helping us teach our child to be independent. Type A children are independent and competitive naturally. We must teach our Type B (but bright) children these skills. A must for parents everywhere who have bright kids with poor grades. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This works

My fifth grade son was showing every sign of classic underachievement. He had had a fourth grade teacher that made him feel like a complete failure, and he took that lesson to heart. His fifth grade year was littered with missing assignments, half-completed work, lies about schoolwork, and an overall horrible attitude. I felt like I was losing my child at the age of 11.
We tried the usual (punishment, lectures, etc.) to no avail. I bought this book, read it and implemented it to the best of my ability. It was counterintuitive to me (no punishment for bad behavior?) but I'm so thankful I went against my intuition.
It proceeded about like he described: two months of not a lot of progress, then the tide began to turn. The turning of the tide, however, corresponded to the end of the school year. He moved from elementary school to middle school, and is doing quite well. He's getting A's and B's in the honor program, is excited about school, and confident of his ability to succeed.
My only complaint about the book is that there aren't a lot of "success" stories included.

bright minds, poor grades

This is a great book. Dr. Michael Whitley has hit a home run.
Here is his premise. Kids want to be independent but as teenagers they are not quite ready. I disagree with the reviewer who says this book will not work on kids who are too far gone. Can you ever classify a kid as too far gone? I doubt it. The techniques discussed in this book are good for all ages of "children" who procrastinate and not just for helping children with school work. Many adults are locked in a syndrome of underachieving because they never had parents who let them experience success and failure in a loving, tolerant enviornment.
The parent is in charge. He does not rant and rave but talks to the child in a calm reassuring voice. The child begins to realize that he is ultimately responsible for his own decisions.
The parent keeps close track of the child's progress but withholds judgement. The child becomes his own best critic. The child appreciates the parental care and lack of criticism. If the child slips it is another teaching moment. Ingenious.
So far so good in our family, I hope this book helps yours too.
