Many war buddies, together every moment, and depending on each other to survive, formed intimate friendships. When they weren’t fighting side by side, they relaxed together, discharging tension in boisterous—sometimes naked—play. The full extent of nude horseplay among men during World War II can’t be known, as cameras were rare and film hard to process, but some men did document this unprecedented male bonding in small, anonymous photos mostly kept hidden away until their deaths.

Los Angeles photographer Michael Stokes has spent years searching out these photos and building an archive of over 500 images. His collection includes soldiers and sailors from Australia, England, France, Italy, Poland, Russia, and the USA, cavorting on the sand in the South Pacific, shivering in the snow of Eastern Europe, posing solo in the barracks, and in great happy groups just about everywhere. These images show men barely out of boyhood, at their physical peak, responding to the reality of battle by living each day to the fullest—a side of the war never before made public.

Naked soldiers caught naked

This book is chock full of soldiers bare-assed or frontally naked. The men in the photos are shown in the shower, at a beach, on their bunks, etc. It is casual nudity of men living and working together. There are several pictures of naked men at play, such as one man sitting on another's shoulders in a lake. These are men, who were comfortable with one another without homophobia coming into play. It was innocent camaraderie without it being sexual. A lot of men would not like the thought of one guy's bare balls resting on his shoulder. These are average guys in the army caught exposing themselves in real-life situations. Not all of the guys are hunks, but they are all beautiful.

Beautiful photography book that is well worth the purchase price!

Great photography book! IF you were to judge a book by the cover, this one would be the winner. Beautiful cover, nice pictures, good historical commentary. Just an all around great book. I collect photography books and this is one of my new top favorites. It is also more reasonable in price than many photography books that are not as good. If you are interested in the male form or history, this is the book for you. The pictures give the viewer a peak of men in a natural, uncensored way, during a time of their sexual awakening and innocence without social labels. It is refreshing to see pictures that are not posed, or touched up like most contemporary photography books (especially gay male erotica). This book has value for its historical, as well as photographic images.

Rare view of WWII presented with quality and finesse.

Wow, so interesting and great that these were published. Show male bonding in a way that does not exist anymore due to homophobia. This is a time when guys could be guys and were not concerned so much about showing affection or looking gay. Its a nice history of WWII that has not been shown before. Quality book and fun really for anyone.

Systematics of Chord Substitution--Very Helpful

I bought this book in the '70s, when I was trying to be a self-taught rock guitarist. It was initially very helpful because of its basic explanation of chord theory--this really advanced my understanding of music in general and the guitar in particular. It also got me interested in jazz, though I didn't really understand much of what he was talking about. Now I play jazz guitar, and this book has been very helpful to me. The book contains pages and pages of different inversions of different chord types, and when you first open the book you might think this is the point, but it's not. The point of the book is found in the sections on chord theory that follow those diagrams. Here Ted Greene gives a very helpful analysis of the principles of chord substitution--these are the basics of jazz guitar comping (accompaniment) and also solo playing. Along with his discussion of the theory, Ted Greene gives many sample ways of playing the things he's discussing, and these are very valuable chord sequences (worth memorizing). My copy of this book is mostly worn out from years of turning the pages, and I can largely chart my musical education in terms of when I digested various parts of this book. It's a book for serious study, but if you're into that, I recommend it highly. His two volumes on single-note soloing are also extremely helpful.

Classic book on guitar chords and harmony.

If Nicolas Slonimsky wrote a chord book akin to his "Thesaurus of Scales and Melodic Patterns," he would probably come up with "Chord Chemistry." Arguably the most famous of Ted Greene's books, "Chord Chemistry" is deep and intriguing, but also concise and clear. Much like Slonimsky's "Thesaurus," anyone who gets this book will likely spend years mastering the concepts inside.

As with all of Ted's books, "Chord Chemistry" is well organized and logical. More importantly, it makes you want to practice and learn everytime you open it up. It requires self-motivation to get the best results, and those few indefatigable musicians who open it up will notice their knowledge of the guitar neck, chords, and harmony in general will greatly expand. The greatest chapters include chord substitutions, how to play chord melodies, and voice-leading. A certain ability to read music is needed as the chapter on chord melodies provides examples only in musical notation. Anyone who buys this will find the diagrams make sense and are, for the most part, easily readable. The massive "chord reference charts" in the middle of the book are worth the price alone. Here you will find most every inversion, chord form, etc. that you will ever need. And regardless of what some people think, Greene does tell us how to apply these chords and make music with them. This is more than just an encyclopedia of chords, it is in fact a method of mastering harmony on the guitar.

If it seems overwhelming at first, stick with it. "Chord Chemistry" does require a bit of knowledge on jazz and classical harmony. If you don't have a lot of background in the theory involved, get Mark Levine's "Jazz Theory Book" and go through that, and the concepts in this book will make much more sense to you. Still, if you are wary of the theory aspect of it, at least go through the chord diagrams and listen to the beautiful sounds of the examples. Plus, your fretting hand will stengthen considerably from playing all the great chords, especially the ones with the huge stretches!

Overall, if you are curious about playing non-standard chords and want to apply them in interesting and musical ways, get this book. For a different take on chords, get the equally fascinating "Modern Chord Progressions," also by Ted Greene.

All chords in Chord Chemistry are shown in a single position only. This book has more chords and better explanations of how to learn and use them than any other book I've seen in 35 years of study.

Difficult answers make for difficult books

This book takes a hard look at all the questions you might have from life, and attempts to provide a concise and rational answer to the difficult questions. At times it's too rational, and will take a completely objective standpoint versus a politically correct one, so Dr. Stamos' writing won't appease everyone. Overall, it's a good book to get you started on thinking objectively about evolution and its importance in science.

Evolutionary psychology from a philosopher's point of view

There are nine chapters dealing in turn with knowledge, consciousness, language, sex, feminism, race ethics, religion, and the meaning of life. Professor Stamos is a philosopher as well as an expert on biological evolution as can be seen from the choices he makes on which to focus. Most evolutionary biologists would not focus on epistemology, for example, as Stamos does in the first chapter, nor would they suppose that somehow evolutionary biology could help us to find an answer to the meaning of life. But it is at the heart of Stamos's endeavor to show how evolutionary biology and the relatively new science of evolutionary psychology can at least give us a new perspective on some of these ancient questions.

The bête noir of the book is the Standard Social Science Model (SSSM) which Stamos finds not only inadequate but so riddled with politically correct and socially correct notions that it needs to be set aside. That the SSSM still holds sway in the humanities and social science departments in many of our colleges and universities is a testament to how far we haven't come. In chapter after chapter Stamos takes issue with the SSSM, applies ideas and knowledge from evolutionary biology and comes up with not only new perspectives, but in some cases enough evidence and rationale to destroy cherished conclusions. Particularly startling and revolutionary are what evo psych has taught us about religion, sex, consciousness, ethics and morality.

Some quick examples: In the case of religion, evolutionary biology has demolished the argument from design (creationists and Intelligent Designers notwithstanding). In ethics and morality we now know that morality does not come from religion but from the very nature of the beast--ourselves. The question of consciousness can be shown to be a product (or byproduct) of the evolutionary process depending on how it is understood or defined. As for sex, we now know, thanks to evolutionary psychology, that men and women have differing strategies which lead to differing behavior patterns, such as males seeking lots of reproductive tries while women try to find a male with resources. Stamos shows that the radical feminist model which claims that there are no significant sexual differences, that human behavioral differences are due to socially constructed gender roles, is mostly mistaken.

If you doubt any of this or are new to evolutionary psychology, I strongly suggest you read this exciting and surprisingly readable book. It will be an eye opener. It is clearly one of the best on the subject that I have read, and I've read dozens. Stamos is by temperament a teacher and has aimed the book at college undergraduates and a general, educated readership. His technique is to show how findings or implications from evolutionary biology relate to the big questions and then to consider objections from both experts and non-experts, contemporary and historical; and then to find a consensus or to show why there is no consensus. He is not shy about disagreeing with the heavyweights in biology or other fields nor does he mince words when taking the mistaken to task. He has the courage of his convictions and isn't afraid to criticize sacred cows. He has little patience with the kind of political correctness that leads to falsehoods. He believes in scientific truth as far as it goes and denigrates the scientific relativity of postmodernism. He is passionate and very well informed. I found the entire book fascinating, although a bit obtuse in parts. (But of course that may point to a failing on my part!)

Stamos is thorough about references, using footnotes and citing opuses, while being clear when he is giving his own opinion. His 17-page bibliography ("References") is an excellent source for further reading from which he has culled some very nice quotes as well as some telling interpretations. For example here is how he explains the official position of the US National Academy of Sciences that religion and science are compatible--a position that Stamos finds untenable: He employs William Provine, who "suspects 'intellectual dishonesty,' [is at work] just as every member of the Congress of the United States professes to be deeply religious but surely is not. What is behind it all, says Provine, is politics motivated by the fear of a public uproar if the truth be told, votes in the case of politicians, public funding in the case of scientists." (pp. 217-218)

I think that is exactly right.

And here is Stamos on human caused pollution and destruction of habitat: "...many ecologists view the human species not as the pinnacle of evolutionary progress but as a cancerous growth or parasite, one that is destroying its host, the biosphere." (p. 217; he credits Eugene P. Odum and William H. McNeill for this metaphorical point of view.)

Stamos even goes so far as to argue against free will in humans. He reminds us of the famous experiment by Benjamin Libet which showed that when people make a conscious decision to do something, such as lift a finger, they do so half a second after the neural activity correlated with the willing takes place. (p. 49) We have the illusion that we are making decisions, and we live happily in our ignorance. The illusion of being in charge is part of what consciousness is all about. Stamos asks, what does consciousness do? How is it adaptive? If it gives us the illusion of being in charge, perhaps that in itself is adaptive. Someone who feels he has no say in something, who feels his efforts have no importance, who feels he is at the mercy of things he can't control may not be as effective in dealing with the environment as the man who feels that he is in charge--even if that feeling is an illusion.

Excellent Overview

I've taken several courses with professor Stamos and adore his teaching style. His belief that philosophy suffers if entirely divorced from science, his affirmation of proper reasoning and logic and his coherent teaching style makes him, honestly, one of the best professors I've ever had. Sadly, I know longer go to York U (I may be going back for grad school :D) so I can no longer take courses with Stamos, so I decided to pick up his latest book hoping his writing style would be reflective of his teaching style. After reading Evolution and the Big Questions, my respect for Stamos has been reaffirmed. It is clear, it gets to the point and offers many evolutionary viewpoints on the subjects at hand (which include Religion, Knowledge, Sexuality and Race). What I love about it most though is that it is not only a collection of viewpoints on philosophical questions from an evolutionary point of view, but Stamos makes his own arguments and lets his own points of view become known. He is very well read in the subject of evolution and this becomes very clear while reading. The book even has an appendix at the end clarifying often misunderstood concepts in evolution as well as a glossary of terms for those not as versed in evolution. You do not need to be an expert in philosophy or evolutionary biology to enjoy this book. It is as clear and understandable as his lectures and definitely worth getting. I'm also excited for his next work on the subject of the myth of innate human rights. I've seen him give his presentation on it in person (I believe it's on YouTube as well) and he presents many novel ideas and makes some very interesting arguments. Stamos is also part of the reason why I want to pursue a career as a philosophy professor. I know I may sound like I am glorifying him, but he really is a great professor and I hope I can be taught by him again if I head back to York for grad school.

If you're planning to buy the Kindle edition, read this first!

I bought the Kindle edition thinking that the 2 other reviewers who bought it first were just exaggerating. Well I think they were too kind. It seems that the Kindle edition they are selling here is a draft! Seriously. I am no English expert, heck, it isn't even my first language, but I could tell some of the lines needed copy editing. There were a lot of misspellings and typos. In the chapter that talks about moisturizers, a stray page about lip balms were inserted in the end of the chapter with a note saying "ADD!!!". And then another one appears after the chapter about scrubs. A big bold "ADDD!". That was the last straw. I mean, the Kindle edition isn't that cheap. $7.99 for a book draft? I've bought a $0.99 book on the same topic (beauty recipes) and it was way better written than this one. I planned to use the book as a reference for a new hobby. Obviously this was one clearly doesn't cut it, with no working table of contents.

As for the content and recipes themselves, if you're new to this hobby of creating your own homemade beauty products for your own use, I'd like to add that the recipes are not for small portions. I'd like to test a lot of recipes and though I could just cut the recipes in half, it could be a cause of a minor headache with several ingredients per recipe.

Overall, I was very disappointed with this book. I highly recommend a cheaper and better book by Jenna Pratchett (Natural Beauty and Skin Care Tips) for beginners who are just testing their wings on this hobby. Nevertheless, I'm glad I was too excited to read this book immediately and was able to return the copy before the 7 days "warranty" was done.

If you're determined to get this book, by all means, please get the printed copy because the Kindle edition really pissed me off. I seriously hope the sellers would review the Kindle edition and then redistribute if for sale.

Essential for any "green beauty"

This book it is essential for any "green beauty." As the followup to one of my favorite beauty reference books (seriously, its predecessor, "The Green Beauty Guide" has never been caught collecting dust on my shelf), "Green Beauty Recipes" has found a home amongst some of my most loved cookbooks. Although it's not full of recipes you eat (well, some of them might taste good, and are certainly safer to consume than most of the beauty products on the market), this book is getting as much, if not more use than its new neighbors (my cookbooks, of course).

There is something for everyone in this book, including Cleansers & Toners, Creams & Lotions, Hair Treatments, Acne & Anti Aging, Scrubs & Masks, Baby Care Products, Fragrances & Deodorants, Massage Oils & Body Lotions. Most of them are vegan or can be adjusted to be made completely animal product-free (only a few contain eggs, dairy or honey). The recipes also vary from the simplest handful of basic kitchen ingredients to some slightly more complex creams containing essential oils and such.

I had a ton of fun testing out recipes from this collection with my friend and our tiny tots. We somehow were able to have a spa day of sorts, while including her infant son and my toddler daughter (who even sported a Troll Princess Mask from the book). We did green masks, cleansed and exfoliated with a Peach and Lime Exfoliating Facial Soap, spritzed on some Skin Detox Toner (I'm a huge fan of this one; I've been using it ever since then), moisturized with a little coconut oil, smoothed our lips with the Sweet Kisses Lip Scrub and topped them off with the Golden Shimmer Lip Balm. And did I mention the relaxing Lemon and Vinegar Foot Soak? We're definitely doing that one again.

The best part is that these recipes work for my sensitive skin. Take it from someone who has had her share of natural beauty experiment disasters, this book actually is kind to your skin and the environment, too. I highly recommend it.

Indispensable read for anyone who cares about their health

I have bought this book about a week ago and I have tried nearly ten recipes. All of them produce great results and results smell and work fantastic. Ingredients are easy to find. Most often you already have all you need in your kitchen and if not you can buy inexpensive oils and vitamins in health food stores.

I also like that the author recommends several basic recipes (in addition to spa quality ones) and then teaches you how to adapt them with active ingredients suited to your skin. So you can make your own moisturizer, shampoo, toner, gel from absolute scratch and then have fun adding oils, clays, vitamins, whatever you fancy. And speaking of local ingredients, most fruit and veggies suggested can be bought from farmers markets easily. For example, I used my own peppermint and dill from my window sill "garden" - can it really be any greener?

I also like that the author doesn't use any chemical preservatives, talc, or mineral oil in her recipes. This makes these recipes very healthy and eco-friendly.

I find this book to be more comprehensive compared to other natural recipe books out there, and it now occupies a rightful place in my kitchen alongside my favorite recipe books.

The book analyses the emerging centre-periphery divisions within the European Union which result from the unprecedented conditions created by the 2008-09 global financial crisis and the subsequent Eurozone sovereign debt crisis. The multiple layers of policy coordination which emerged in response to the crisis have initiated a process by which the EU is increasingly divided in terms of the level of vertical integration between the Eurozone core group and differentiated peripheries amongst the outsiders. At the same time the sovereign debt crisis has created a periphery of predominantly Southern European countries within the Eurozone that became dependent on external financial support from the other member states. The contributions in this book critically examine various aspects of the emerging internal post-crisis constellation of the EU. The main focus lies on national and supranational governance issues, national dynamics and dynamics in the Eurozone core as well as in the periphery.

Christian Schweiger is Senior Lecturer in the School of Government and International Affairs at Durham University, UK. His main research interests are the political economy of the EU, national varieties of economic and social development in the member states and transatlantic relations.

José M. Magone is Professor of Regional and Global Governance at the Berlin School of Economics and Law, Germany. He has published widely on European politics, particularly on Southern Europe and European integration.

Alongside the famous characters who colored this landscape—including Muhammad’s cousin ’Ali; the Crusader-era hero Saladin; and the poet Rumi—are less well-known figures, such as Ibn Fadlan, whose travels in Eurasia brought fascinating first-hand accounts of the Volga Vikings to the Abbasid Caliph; the eleventh-century Karima al-Marwaziyya, a woman scholar of Prophetic traditions; and Abu al-Qasim Ramisht, a twelfth-century merchant millionaire.
 
An illuminating read for anyone interested in learning more about this often-misunderstood civilization, this book creates a vivid picture of life in all arenas of the pre-modern Muslim world.

About the Author
Chase F. Robinson was Lecturer and Professor of Islamic History in the Faculty of Oriental Studies and Fellow of Wolfson College at the University of Oxford from 1993 until 2008, when he was appointed Distinguished Professor of History and Provost of the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where he now serves as President. His extensive publications on Islamic history include Islamic Historiography, Empire and Elites after the Muslim Conquest, and The New Cambridge History of Islam, Volume 1.
