About the Author
ELAINE R. S. HODGES worked as a scientific illustrator in the Department of Entomology at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of Natural History. After entering the field of scientific illustration at the Smithsonian in 1965, she helped found the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, serving as its first newsletter editor and later as vice president and president. She has also lectured, taught, and written extensively in the field.

The definitive reference for scientific illustration

Since its first edition this book has been by far the best single resource available for anyone with a serious interest in scientific, medical, biological, nature, botanical, or wildlife illustration.
Don't be daunted by the price - this book is worth far more than the next 10 competing books combined. I've been a professional medical and scientific illustrator for 35 years, and I own hundreds of books on the subject, but I think this single volume should be the foundation of any reference library on visual communication in the biomedical sciences.

The best one out there

I have little to add to the other reviews except to maybe say that I've tried to collect whatever published material exists on scientific illustration over the past 40 years, and this is the only one to buy. Anything else is now superfluous.
