Egyptologist Wilkinson presents a clear, comprehensive and beautifully illustrated (in color and b&w) guide to the bewildering array of Egyptian deities-a complete catalogue of gods and goddesses supplemented by examinations of the history of Egyptian religion, the rise and fall of the gods, and the ways in which they were worshipped. Ancient Egypt was, Wilkinson writes, the most theocratic of any ancient culture; religion pervaded daily life for comoners as well as the pharaohs. Wilkinson's gorgeously illustrated book adds new dimension to popular literature on ancient Egypt, for it is a handy dictionary of divinities and a comprehensive analysis of the land's theology and religious history. Readers will be drawn in by the copious fine reproductions of classic Egyptian art--some familiar, such as the dual portrait of Nefertiti and Akhnaten, but most not, including the intriguing gold-painted wooden images of the sky-cow Isis-Mehet. Most of the photographs are black-and-white, but of such high quality and detail that they are more than merely serviceable. And once readers open the book to look at the pictures, they well may stay to read the well-organized, comprehensive, clearly written text. In addition to history and theology, Wilkinson offers excellent sociological sections on everyday religion, including discussion of divination and offerings to the gods by ordinary people, and on the relationship of the ruling classes, especially the pharaohs, to the gods. A Plethora of Deities

Richard Wilkinson's latest book (he has previously written "Reading Egyptian Art," "Symbol and Magic in Egyptian Art," and "The Complete Temples of Ancient Egypt") presents the reader with an impressive selection of all the major gods and goddesses, and many of the minor ones, of ancient Egypt. Although hardly "complete" in the technical sense (Wilkinson discusses "only" 500 of Egypt's 1500 or so deities, and much more could be said about the ones he does discuss), the book is fairly "complete" in a practical sense: most gods that most readers want to look up, will get at least a brief mention. For example, you will find here the 24 Hours of the Day and Night, 12 (of 21) Gates of the Underworld, all 42 Gods of Judgement, and all 42 (hmm... there's that number again!) Nome Deities.
The book begins with twelve brief essays (4-6 pages each) on Egyptian religion, covering such topics as creation myths, manifestations of divinity, temple and popular worship, and divine kingship. The essays are thoughtful, informative, and up-to-date with current scholarship. I wish they had been longer, because they deserve to be expanded at greater length than the book allocates to them.
The rest of the book, some 180 pages, is devoted to a "Catalogue of Deities," organized by biological shape (anthropomorphic male and female, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, insects, and inanimate objects). This is a great idea, but it could have been taken even further. A visual index of shapes would make lookup much easier, and would only take an additional page or two. A name index is, of course, provided. Why not give a hieroglyphic index as well?
Going to the individual entries, Wilkinson generally provides information about the mythology, iconography, and worship of each deity. The deities are generously illustrated, with line drawings and photographs. Again, I would wish that many of these entries could be expanded, both in terms of discussion and in terms of visual iconography. This is not a criticism of Wilkinson; it just reflects the practical limitations of the book.
To summarize, Wilkinson's "Gods and Goddesses" is a very well-written, thoughtful, accurate, beautifully produced and illustrated reference on the religion of ancient Egypt. In terms of coverage it is somewhere between a handbook and an encyclopedia. I am very glad to have it in its present form, and I only wish that it had been much longer, since it is clear that Wilkinson has more to say about this subject than could fit into the covers of the present book. I would gladly pay double the price to have a truly complete encyclopedia of Egypt's gods from this author.

Easy to Read but Packed with up-to-date Details

I agree with the other reviewers - beautifully illustrated, mostly in full color. It is comprehensive yet particularly the first half of the book is easy to read in it's entirety. The first part of the book covers general concepts of Egyptian Religion and the deities. The second covers individual deities in detail.

I had been looking for a book on Ancient Egyptian religion and deities which was neither outdated in its ideas, nor sterile or boring, nor full of fluff, nor overwhelmed with dense detail, nor assumed detailed prior knowledge of anthropology, archeology or African/Near Eastern history and religion. This book is it. It is beautifully clear and explains how Egyptian views of each deity changed over time. It clearly presents for each deity what syncretism occurred (merging with other gods or the adoption of other gods' attributes) with time. It contains some of the most recent thinking on how the Egyptians might have viewed their own deities. My only minor negative would be that there are no references or footnotes in the text itself for the expert. However, within the body of the text, the author does mention which academics advanced which important concepts and coupled with the extensive and detailed bibliography arranged by subject matter at the end of the book, this minor gripe is assuaged.

The binding and quality of the book, its print, and illustrations are beautiful - it would make a lovely gift for someone.

Easy to read for both the beginner and the non-beginner in this area, but full of crystal clear detail for one who wants a good reference book even for more advanced students of religion.

About the Author

Brian Siler has been developing Visual Basic applications since 1994. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the University of Memphis in 1995. In addition to his day job as lead systems analyst for a major hotel corporation, Brian occasionally develops custom VB applications for other individuals. He has created many types of computer programs, including client/server, Active Server Pages, and "n-tier" Web applications. Brian is familiar with a variety of databases, including Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase, and Microsoft Access. Additional information about some of Brian's VB projects as well as sample source code is available on the Web at http://www.vbinsider.com. He has coauthored two previous Visual Basic books. Not a beginers book as it wants you to think

This book is easy to read, and it has a lot of useful information, but the fact is that the book sucks for beginers. Hear me out. I've started this book and it immediately jumps into two semi-complex programs that are about a page long with all sorts of stuff that gets NO specific explanation. I thought, okay it will get better. You don't even get to the actualy coding until page 140. The coverage of the compiler is nice and all, but this book goes into advances topics without explaining the basics. You are left dumbfounded as example after example uses functions etc that the author doesn't even try to partially explain. A lot of quick tips are given and small isolated examples of functions, but this book is not a tutorial for a beginner. This book is more of a "pretty good" review of vb.net for an already intermediate visual basic programmer. I'm going to need another book or to find some really good tutorials on the net because this book is just leaving me confused.

A pretty good effort

I've been a VB programmer for the past 5 years and was looking for a book to learn the new features of VB.NET. I think the problem with this book is it tried to cover all the areas of VB.NET for all levels of developers. For example, Section II on VB Programming Fundamentals (Chapters 6,7,8) would be of little use for experienced developers. On the other hand, there are some areas that were not covered at all. For example, items like the TreeView and ListView controls were not discussed on how they've been changed in .NET.
On the positive side, this was the only book I found that covered the use of Crystal Reports inside VB.NET, plus working with other applications such as MS Excel and Word. Also, the section on Tips on Conversion from VB6 is a usefull checklist.
Overall, this book is probably better suited for the entry level to intermediate programmer. For more experienced programmers, it would best serve as a quick start guide for the concepts covered in this book.

Very well written with a wealth of useful information

For someone like me with a VB and ASP background, this book has been perfect. Each subject is first briefly introduced with some basic information and then the author moves forward quickly covering intermediate to advanced stuff, all of the time focusing on practical everyday programming tasks. The author knows what is important and of interest to a programmer, and time and time again, questions that arise in your mind while reading a sentence are answered clearly and straight to the point in the next few sentences. The book is wery well written in a relaxed, friendly style. 5 stars for sure.

About the Author
John B. Nici has a master’s degree in art history and is retired from teaching at Lawrence High School in Cedarhurst, New York. He is currently a Professor of Art History at Queens College in Flushing, New York. In 2004, he was the recipient of Queens College’s President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching by Adjunct Faculty. He has published extensively on art history pedagogy and has presented and published scholarly papers on topics that include Byzantine Art, Gothic Art, and Delacroix. He is the author of Famous Works of Art―and How They Got that Way.

Great book, would be better in color

The content in this book is great and is backed up by both the information given by my art history professor as well as various textbooks. Most of the time the works mentioned in this book seem to be highly relevant to the AP curriculum. It is slightly bothersome that the book is printed in black and white, though I understand that this is a cost-saving measure. Because it is an art history textbook, I believe that an exception could be made in this case because color is relevant in some of the artworks. Also, not relating to the book, it would be great if Barron's would make flash cards with the artworks. (And why does Princeton Review not publish a review book on this subject?!?!?)

Great for lazy AP Art History students!`

I typically buy my AP books early so I copy more notes in them throughout the school year. This book does a good job of showing the bigger picture throughout art history, and having in depth analysis of important works throughout each time period. Some of the time period might be a bit brief, and it doesn't talk much about art beyond the european tradition. It also doesn't have any specific information about the artists personally. So overall, a must have for art history students, and probably the best AP prep book for Art History out there. But you DEFINITELY will need more material than provided in this book.

I like this book and it gives you a lot of information to study for the test. The information is kind of bland. I think that the annotated mona lisa is a better study guide book.

Shemeem Burney Abbas investigates the rituals at the Sufi shrines and looks at women's participation in them, as well as male performers' use of the female voice. The strengths of the book are her use of interviews with both prominent and grassroots female and male musicians and her transliteration of audio- and videotaped performances. Through them, she draws vital connections between oral culture and the written Sufi poetry that the musicians sing for their audiences. This research clarifies why the female voice is so important in Sufi practice and underscores the many contributions of women to Sufism and its rituals.

Worth the investment - there are some very surprising differences in translation that will make you pause and think. Don't take anything for granted, there are some verses that deserve a serious second and third look because of the new light of this translation.

The Lamsa Bible is Worth Reading

While the Greek and Roman churches flourished, a herdsmen people living in Muslim Kurdishia had their Aramaic manuscripts, unadulterated by well-meaning Christians to the West. Discovered around WW I by the British, a lad with a photographic memory was "adopted" by missionaries, taught English and well educated. Dr. Lamsa's translation builds faith in God's protection of His Word as this Bible is remarkably similar to other English Bibles. This N.T. is all you need study as the O.T. was preserved by the Jews and not molested by well meaning Christians.
