Kindergarten-Grade 3–Mr. Whiskers allows his eight students to spend the day exploring seven science centers around the classroom and on the playground. As the students experiment, they uncover "big ideas" about matter. For example, using water droppers allows them to figure out that matter takes up space, while playing with "gloop" points out that matter can be explored by using the senses. As each concept is revealed, it is displayed in the ink-and-watercolor illustrations on a bulletin board, banner, or clipboard. Although this book is not as fantastic as Joanna Cole's "Magic School Bus" stories (Scholastic), it takes a similar approach by encouraging students to learn through interacting with one another as well as with adults. Readers can follow the characters' thought processes through the narration and in dialogue bubbles. Mr. Whiskers provides a note to adults at the beginning about how students learn through exploration and again at the end by supplying information on how to create learning kits (including addresses for purchasing supplies). About the Author
Michael Elsohn Ross is the author of more than forty books for children, most about science or world cultures. He lives right next to California's Yosemite National Park, where, for close to thirty years, he has been working as a naturalist, taking visitors on hikes and walks to learn all about the park. His ideas, he says, "come from my work as a naturalist and my adventures with school kids."

Paul Meisel is well known for his illustrations in more than thirty

I loved this book, but it was a little long for one sitting of elementary aged students (K-3). Broken into smaller arts as you do the experiments over a week or two it works great.

This one is fantastic. I read it with my 4-

I don't understand why there aren't any other Mr. Whiskers books! This one is fantastic. I read it with my 4-, 5-, and 11-year-old home schoolers, after reading Dr. Seuss's Bartholomew and the Oobleck and making our own oobleck out of corn starch and water. It kept all their attention (it did help that the little ones still had oobleck to play with while listening). The little ones have already asked to do all the other activities in the book.
I loved how realistic yet polite and educational the characters' interactions were. One of Mr. Whiskers' students wants everything to be all his, and another is preoccuppied with booger humor, but they all make meaningful comments that make good models for my kids of things they could say while observing. Mr. Whiskers is the model of an excellent science teacher, allowing kids to try things out for themselves and make their own observations, which he then rephrases to teach them the basics of matter.

Losing fat and building muscle, plain and simple. One concept that many people seem to have a problem with is the idea that in order to keep fat off of your body you need to put on muscle. While at first glance this may seem counterproductive — gaining weight in order to lose weight — it's all about metabolism.


Metabolism can be summed up as all of the chemical reactions that take place within an organism. In terms of weight loss and fitness, metabolism basically means all of those calories that your body burns throughout the day. Your goal is to add lean tissue and in turn elevate our resting metabolic rate.


Muscle creates metabolism


So how do we do that?


As we add lean muscle to our bodies the muscle will require more calories to survive. Imagine adding a bunch of plug-in space heaters into your apartment during the winter. As we keep adding heaters, the energy demands go up and our electric bill rises. More heaters, more heat. Similarly, as we keep adding lean muscle, our body must use more calories to operate that new muscle… Just like the space heaters. More muscle more calories burned.


Now let's take it one step further and consider the future. As we are adding lean muscle over the coming weeks and months your body will burn more and more at-rest calories. Let's look at our analogy of adding the heaters inside of our house. There is a certain point where you have enough heaters going to keep you from getting cold, and then you can set all of the heaters to their lowest setting and they will still keep your house warm, no matter how cold it is outside.


We want enough lean muscle on our bodies so that the fat we have lost can't come back. There is a tipping point when you are working out, where you have developed enough lean tissue (somewhere between 6 and 15 pounds) that the fat you have lost can't come back because you’re burning so many calories throughout the day.


Think of pounds of fat in terms of the calories they represent. A single (1) pound of fat is roughly 3500 cal. In general terms, a pound of lean muscle will add an additional 20 to 30 cal. per day to your metabolism. That means if I were to put on 10 pounds of lean muscle I would be burning an extra 200 to 300 cal. each and every day. So if I have 10 pounds of fat to lose (35,000 cal.) that I need to put on enough muscle to compensate for that fat so that once it's gone I don't have to keep stressing about it.


A reasonable workout should burn between 500 and 1,000 calories in a given day (weight training plus cardio, CrossFit, extreme cardio, etc.). If you are working out 3 to 4 days a week — which you need to be — you are burning an extra 3000 to 4000 cal. per week. That would burn a pound of fat each week. No one should be afraid of lean muscle; it doesn't take very much space. Ten (10) pounds of lean muscle is not much bigger than a cantaloupe — as far as how much space it takes up in your body (volume). Just 5 pounds of fat is roughly the size of an American football!


You’re right, that’s f’ing gross. But think of it like this: you could put on 10 pounds of muscle and if you lost just 3 pounds of fat you would not be any bigger.

The best way to keep yourself in the right direction for physical fitness and peak performance is to make sure you document everything. This is a good training diary for client and trainer, but it also includes several chapters of basic and kinesiology that everybody should know

ReviewMyf my Favorite Health Assesssment Textbook

I have used many editions of this book, I think I started out with 2nd edition, because I taught Physical/Health Assessment for many years. When I first started teaching it 2 or 3 semesters a year I had the opportunity to review many and this was always my favorite- especially when you started offering the online materials. Even if everything did not apply (I taught at ASN, BSN levels and had my nurse practitioner students use it for their basic review text. However many texts were available for review from 1990 to 2008, I reviewed them. In 2013 I simply went to Amazon and asked for Jarvis's newest book available on this topic
When I review a text for course use I pick out the chapters of things I know very well and read them word by word, then peruse the other chapters, though after teaching 29 years I am quite familiar. I was also a Family Nurse Practitioner.
Students did not complain about readability and pictures and so on, just how big the assignments were. The whole book is way to much for one course (that's why NP students need a good book for review). And I was pleased with the pain assessment chapter and especially slides. As much as it "pains" me to see in research literature, medical and nursing students are woefully undereducated on pain management' I have stayed somewhat current in pain management by belonging to the American Society for Pain Management Nursing ( and a few other groups like the American Pain Society). A close friend with similar nursing background decided in 1980 to select the most serious problem of our whole profession. We chose undertreatment of pain. We have slowed down somewhat . We plan to continue until we develop dementia or die.

I will stop now, As a mostly retired nurse the chance to talk to nursing colleagues is not too common except in the every three month ASPMN meeting. If you are interested we have a website, the St. Louis Chapter of the American Society for Pain Management Nursing. To it's credit the national group has gone from 19 members in the late 1990's to at least five thousand, despite many hurdles posed by the DEA

I retired early to take care of two seriously ill parents but I still teach an occasional Health/PE class at local junior college Although there are not a lot of changes in the actual human body I do love the updates on tips and techniques. Your book was very easy for me to do a self-review. It is so good for all the areas I fought for many years ago, evidenced-based assessment and critical thinking
.

The item arrived when the original order stated it would - I was hoping it would have arrived earlier - it stated that it was mailed immediately but I was surprised at how long it took to arrive - I was going to cancel and go with yet another company and pay the expedited shipping which was cheaper than this company but was hoping for the best (I had ordered with a previous company that later said they made a mistake on inventory and refunded my money) - in any event they arrived a day after I needed them - the product looks good - I opened one package - hopefully I can use them for another event - I didn't want to go through the bother of returning them

TRULY A DREAM TO READ TO A CHILD

Received this today and couldn't wait to read it. I'm a grandmotherly age, although I don't have any grandchildren yet. I listened to Ainsley (if I may please call her that) talk about her father and this book, including her reading from it, on Fox and Friends the day it was released; and I immediately, before the show ended, went to Amazon to order it. I knew I wanted to have this on my shelf ready to read to my grandchild or grandchildren if I am lucky enough to be blessed with them. I love to read it and look at the beautiful artwork (by Jaime Kim) - so sweet, soft, and lovely; so fitting for Ainsley's words. The poetry is so lovely and will be wonderful to read to a child over and over again. Note that it is appropriate for boys or girls; no gender is mentioned. What a loving, beautiful tribute to her daughter. This book is full of the love a mother feels for her child and the words of wisdom, love, and hope we want to pass on to our children and our grandchildren - A mother's dream. Well done, Ainsley; and thank you for this gift.

A precious book, written by a precious lady

Ainsley Earhardt is one of the classiest ladies in news right now. Add to that, she is a godly woman, a beautiful lady, a southern belle, and a wonderful mother. We need more women like this writing children's books. This book is a beautiful example of a wonderful woman pouring out examples from her own childhood and illustrating those ideas into an encouraging book of faith, hope, and dreams for our children. What a lovely book to read to your children. This will be a favorite at bedtime around our house for years to come! Thank you, Mrs. Earhardt for this work of art. It has truly blessed our family. I highly recommend this precious book.

A Reminder to Love Yourself and Understand Human Nature

I read a book almost every week, but this is my first book review. I felt that if my review were the reason any woman (or man), who might otherwise be put off from buying this book by the Cosmo-esque title, actually went ahead and bought it and changed their relationships and lives for the better, well then the benefit (improved lives) would have vastly outweighed the cost (the 15 minutes I spent writing this that I could have spent working, eating, conversating). Ergo, my review.

First, the most important thing to recognize is that this book is not for every woman (or man). If you meet some of the following (related) criteria:
1) Your parents had a loving, respectful, stable, reasonably equal partnership or you were otherwise exposed to such partnership
2) You have high self-esteem and consider yourself secure, inside or outside of relationships
3) You are already in a successful relationship or don't tend to have much trouble in relationships
...then you've probably already internalized the essence of the book. You don't need it. At best, employing its strategies would be redundant, at worst, disingenuous.

Onto those to whom the book is intended, and who would most benefit, in addition to those who do not meet the criteria above:
1) You've gone on a few dates with the guy, and you thought things were going well, and he started to slowly fade out or suddenly disappeared.
2) You've been dating a guy for a while, but he doesn't want to commit.
3) You're in a relationship, and your boyfriend was so sweet in the beginning, and he slowly or suddenly stopped. You feel taken for granted.

It's like the clouds opened up and God slapped some common sense into me. Somewhere between my parents' divorce, my mom's emotional unavailability, The Notebook (the book AND the movie), memes about "love is hard work" and "love conquers all", in the name of finding the love I so desperately wanted and needed, I had not only forgotten about number one (myself!), but I had forgotten some very basic tenets of human nature.

In a nutshell:

1) Above all, love yourself and love your life. Fill it with people who matter. Fill it with passions and interests. Fill it with memorable experiences. Constantly seek to be challenged and learn and fail and grow.

2) When a man enters your life, don't over-invest your time or your mental real estate. Make him a part of your life, just like every other part. Don't lose your rhythm. Especially if he is not chasing after you, but EVEN IF HE IS. Human nature reminder: People are myopic - they see the fun in seeing you all the time, but not the disinterest and contempt that such continual contact will breed. You have to keep the balance. If you fail to balance his part in your life, you lose your rhythm, you lose track of what it is that fulfills you - and you start to seek it from him. You become needy.

3) If at some point, you have not followed 2), you've showed him that you need him, and it will follow that he will become complacent. He'll be less affectionate, stop taking you out, etc. etc. Human nature reminder: People are pragmatic and somewhat lazy - if they can do less or more, and still get the same result, they will do less. Always. Maybe you'll try to talk to him or start to nag him. But he's putting less effort, you're still around and you still care (because you're nagging him), he has no incentive to change. People don't listen to words, they listen to action. So if he's not treating you right, stop putting yourself in a position to be treated not right. Stop showing affection. Stop contacting him. Stop being available and accepting last-minute invites to the guys' house.

I suppose I can see how people might perceive this as "game playing" or being inauthentic. Because really, you like or love the guy, you want to hug and kiss him and offer him backrubs, even when he's not treating you right. In your head (as was in my head), if you were the perfect girlfriend, if you did everything you could, maybe he'd see it and turn himself around. So in a way, to withhold affection or to say "no, sorry, I'm busy" when you're not actually busy is inauthentic. But only at first. I promise, after that, it becomes easier. Because slowly, you are empowering yourself. You are saying that you love yourself enough to do the thing you don't want to in the moment (to say no) to gain the thing you deserve long-term (to be treated with love and respect). And then it's easy, and it's real.

It's like telling you to do this

Extremely negative book. I didn't get to finish. Actually the author see the relationship from the surface, rather than seeing it through why women are doing those things. It's not from a holistic perspective, but a narrow personal view. It's kind of depressing to read. It's like telling you to do this, don't do that. It's hard. You know those rules, but if you really live on them, you're not being yourself. If women having difficulties dealing with relationship, then it's more important to look into self and learn to self love. Grow from it rather than following these rules. The author is saying how the women magazines give so many bad advices on relationship. But he's doing the same thing, while he just think his opinion is "right".
Wish could return the book and get refund. Waste of money. I would really like to see something that's enpowering and positive

About the Author
Patrick J. Carnes is a nationally-known speaker on addiction and recovery issues. He is the author of Out of the Shadows, Contrary to Love, A Gentle Path Through the 12 Steps, and Don't Call It Love. He is the clinical director for sexual disorder services at The Meadows in Wickenburg, Arizona. Carnes is the editor-in-chief of Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention, the official journal of the National Council of Sexual Addiction/Compulsivity, an organization for which he also serves as a board member. He also serves on the national advisory board of the American Academy of Health Care Providers in the Addictive Disorders.

A solid companion guide to addiction therapy

I used this book in conjunction with a therapist, as I felt the public addiction help meetings were not helping me to focus on the most important issues that I did not want to deal with, or express in a public help meeting. The author makes clear that you should work through the steps as you are able to. Keep making progress as much as you can, and review previous chapters too. You will likely have set-backs and relapse, but do not give up trying and making progress. I do not see this book as a way to avoid going to self-help meetings, or avoid individual/marital therapy. You will need the help provided from very good external support people,even though you may feel that you can't depend on others. This book is a very helpful guide to help you keep making progress. Well organized, and very helpful commentary from the author. The 'work' sessions in the chapters will get you to understand and face some of the key 'myths', the untruths, you have falsely believed about yourself, and why you keep shooting yourself in the foot with life decisions. You must admit to yourself several truths: That your life is out of control, that you can't resolve it on your own, and you need help from someone who is trained to help you uncover some painful issues that have held you back for years (or decades). A useful guide

A book that acts as a guide through some of the most turbulent phases of life. Much of this kind of books are needed, and the research in this field should be given importance. At a first glance the concept projected seems like power taken away from one's own, but the author patiently explains how empowering this actually is. The process, however, needs a lot of practice, and a good mentor in one's locality. Having compassion on people haunted by several types of fears helps them get rid of the social shaming of asking for help, and in turn helps the subject developing further.

A deeper, detailed approach to addiction recovery

Many people know about the twelve steps to addiction recovery. Many suffering with addictions participate in Twelve Step groups. This book serves as a guide to approaching the twelve steps from a perspective which leads to a greater understanding of addiction and thus a deeper interaction with each of the twelve steps. Its workbook format allows the reader to answer basic, but important questions about their addiction and addictive history. It helps the reader build the essential inventories found in the twelve steps. I would advise that this book is an essential guide book for the addict struggling to take a meaningful, deep approach to the twelve steps. It is a great tool for the twelve step addiction sponsor, who wants to offer a systematic, through approach to addiction recovery. Wonderful!
