Stover (The Bombshell Manual of Style) wrote her playful anthropology of Bohemian culture from an insider’s viewpoint. The daughter of Bohemians, at one time a fully practicing Bohemian, and a now a Bohemian "with some bourgeois pretense," she is clearly steeped in the lifestyle. In this book, she documents the most important attributes of the five variations of Bohemians (Nouveau, Gypsy, Beat, Zen and Dandy) and of Bohemian philosophy generally, beginning with a "diagnosis" that serves mostly to emphasize how varied Bohemians are and how fiercely they resist any kind of classification. Stover is fully aware of the futile nature of her quest to pin down such elusive characters, and her writing is accordingly ironic, full of asides and amusing pseudo-scholarly footnotes. The book’s four main parts describe Bohemians in all their counterculture splendor, with short sections on everything from typical Bohemian names ("they name their offspring with the same whimsical sensibility with which they name their pets"), clothes, typical relationships, choice of reading material and music, and eating habits (featuring "The Twenty-Four-Hour Menu of the Starving Bohemian"). In fictionalized profiles of nine Bohemians from around the world, including Dantini the septuagenarian magician and Atlas the Dutch artist, Stover brings these unusual figures to life in a wonderfully familiar way. True Bohemians certainly won’t need this book to decide whether they’re Bohemian, but may enjoy these humorous takes on their subculture, and non-Bohemians will find it a delightful introduction to that unique existence.

About the Author
Laren Stover is the author of The Bombshell Manual of Style, and a novel, Pluto, Animal Lover, a finalist for The Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers award. She has been a resident of Yaddo and Hawthornden Castle and received the Ludwig Vogelstein Foundation grant for fiction in 1991. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, Bomb, and The New York Observer. She lives in New York.

About the Author
Beyerl is well known as a Master Herbalist and as a Wiccan author of eight books. Having been a guest speaker and educator at events throughout the United States, he relocated to the Pacific Northwest in 1993 where he continues his work with The Rowan Tree Church which he founded in 1976 and The Hermit's Grove, a nonprofit educational organization, which he founded in 1992. Beyerl teaches herbal medicine and horticulture at Seattle Central Community College and a Master Herbalist Program through The Hermit's Grove. The Hermit's Grove is both the location of The Rowan Tree hurch and a 45,000 square foot herbal and botanical garden.

It's just Ok...

This book is just ok. I saw that it had a handy index in the back, so you can just look up the specific property and go straight to the page. But it is very light on the specific applications for each herb, and sometimes the applications are extremely vague, saying only 'Saturn rules this plant' or something to that effect. Also, I tend to like reference books that explain WHY each property has specific associations, not just the what. It would be an ok reference for beginners, or for those looking to compare or cross-reference other guides. But as a "Master Book" it falls very short of the claims such an ambitious title makes.

On the plus side, it doesn't needlessly weigh down each plant with a thousand generic properties like some other guides I have (seriously, not every plant can be used for love, luck, fortune, and connecting to spirits).

My favorite metaphysical guide is "Love Is In The Earth". It's purely minerals, but the formatting and as a reference, it suits my needs perfectly. I wish I could find a book on herbalism that is like it.

Notes from a Novice

When I first began my study of Wicca, one of the first mentions was of Herbalism and its importance. I realized I had no idea what any plants did at all.

I searched for a guide that was highly held by my internet peers, and this seemed to be the best option.

I received it in a timely manner.

As I began to read, I felt myself sucked into every bit of information. There are details on culture, on magick, and of course, the remedial properties of the herbs.
As a beginner, I couldn't have asked for more. It was everything I needed to get my start.

I found this book useful and I believe anyone who is into herbalism would find it useful. It has information on a good number of various herbs, both magical and medicinal. It does give some information on how to use them medicinally and magically however not in
great detail (that account's for a 4 star rating) but, still I have enjoyed this book. I gave it the 5th star on the rating because of the price. Overall I recommend this book for anyone who's into herbalism. :)

This book is a wonderful read, and visually

This book is a wonderful read, and visually, very stunning representations of a bygone era in cooking. Lots of ideas, and lots of recipes, requiring skill and diligence but nothing the committed home cook can't do (as long as he or she can obtain the ingredients - e.g., foie gras and truffles are represented heavily, and the easier things - e.g., venison, quail, pheasant, etc.).

The only disappointment - and this isn't unexpected, frankly, given the age of the book - is that the book mentions an accompanying recipe booklet, which was missing here. The recipe index at the book counts numerous recipes that are only included in the booklet, so it would have been nice and I am on the hunt. Craig Blaibourne and his collaborators, Pierre Franey and Jacques Pepin, along with many others (Julia Child, of course; Andre Soltner come immediately to mind) - heralds of a grande cuisine brought more broadly to our shores.

This is a very good manual , but beware - there are a lot of errors in the problems and solutions to those problems. I have had to sift through a lot of errors in the manual and there is also a lot of errors in the equations. However, overall - considering the amount of material covered and the depth of it, it is very useful.

Professional licensing exams are always a big step in any career, and usually cause some anxiety in those getting ready to take them. The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is generally the first step in the process to becoming a professional licensed engineer (P.E.). Since 2014, the FE exam is a computer-based exam, a significant change in style and test-taking from the previous paper-based test. As a result, you'll need updated study materials and strategy to prepare for the test. During the test, you will be provided with an electronic NCEES FE Reference Handbook, as well as a computer based on-screen calculator program, as your only other tools during the 6 hour test. The test covers sixteen areas of knowledge: Mathematics; Probability and Statistics; Engineering Sciences; Computational Tools; Materials Science; Chemistry; Fluid Mechanics and Dynamics; Thermodynamics; Material and Energy Balances; Heat Transfer; Mass Transfer and Separation; Chemical Reaction Engineering; Process Design and Economics; Process Control; Safety, Health and Environment; and Ethics and Professional Practice. Chances are good you have never taken a test like this before, so good preparation is vital.

The FE Chemical Review Manual will be a big help in preparing you for the exam. It covers the sixteen areas of knowledge well, so if you work through the review manual you should be able to find areas of strength and weakness to further refine your studies. It also includes practice questions, and gives keen insight with comments on some of the subtle differences you may find based on the NCEES FE Reference Handbook. For example, it gives a short discussion specifically on how the handbook presents the net work differently from net heat in a basic cycle--that's something good to know *before* you're in the test. The manual there also allows you to read the book on any web-enabled device; add electronic notes and bookmarks; perform a full text search; and answer questions in an interactive format.

The book is only one part of the strategy outlined in the manual for how to pass the exam. In addition to the book, they recommend further study in those areas you find you are weak (kind of a no-brainer); obtaining your own copy of the NCEES FE Reference Handbook as part of your preparation (you *really* don't want to have the first time you see the handbook on the day of the test where you're supposed to use it--only place to get one is on the MyNCEES website; use the version appropriate for the test dates you're planning on taking); and taking computer-based practice tests to get you used to the format you will see on the "real" test. Again, you can find computer-based practice exams on MyNCEES which use actual questions used on past exams.

That being said, it is worth noting that the authors are so convinced you'll pass the test with their review method, they will refund you the purchase price of your book if you do not pass the FE exam. It's also worth noting that in 2015, for first time test takers, all having attended EAC/ABET-accredited engineering programs and taking the test within 12 months of graduation, only 75% passed the exam. You've spent years in undergrad getting ready for this, so anything that improves your chances at passing is a good deal. You're not going to find a better review manual that covers every topic you'll be tested on, much less one with a money-back guarantee.

About the Author
John P. Irish received his B.A. in philosophy and political science from Southern Methodist University, his M.A. in philosophy from the University of Arkansas, and a M.L.S. in American Studies from Southern Methodist University. He is currently working on his Doctorate in Humanities from SMU. He has been teaching U.S. History for over 15 years. He currently teaches AP U.S. History at Carroll Senior High School in Southlake, Texas, where he coaches the UIL Social Studies Team and is the UIL Academic Coordinator.

Edward Carson received his B.A. in History and M.Ed. in History Education from Harding University. His current research examines race, religion, and society, particularly that of W.E.B. Du Bois. He does editorial work for The Christian Century Magazine Then and Now, and sits on the Christian Scholars' Conference Committee. He is a residential faculty member in the History Department at Brooks School in North Andover, Massachusetts.

Historical Thinking Skills Practice at Your Fingertips!

This is a fantastic resource! I've been teaching AP European History for many years now, but with the redesign going into effect this year, I've felt like a first year teacher in many ways. I just received this book this past week and already I feel that it is going to greatly benefit my students this year and for many years to come. If you want to be able to effectively teach your students how to think like a historian and do the work of a historian, you need this book! It's great practice for students doing the work of historians and is fantastic in helping them develop the skills they need to be successfull on the new AP European History exam.
